I'm sure no one decided he wasn't worth remembering. It was thousands of years, right? People naturally aren't going to believe something passed down that far is totally true. Or, the people who would otherwise pass it down could die, or disasters could destroy records... Nothing is permanent. The fact that his memory lasted that long even as a fairy tale is impressive.
