Welcome to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea!

Your goal is for your team to travel a distance of 20,000 leagues in your submersible. The teams that continue the longest will win a ~fabulous prize~: instant and painless revives, and full healing for one team of their choosing.

The journey won't be easy, though. Every time you choose to take your submersible further into the briny deep, you run the risk of suffering a fatal setback imposed by the challenges of the sea.

You can turn back at any time, safely surfacing. However, fortune favors the bold, and once you ascend, you cannot return to the challenge.

So the decision each round is up to you: will you boldly press onward, to discover the unknown? Or will you return to the realm above, and leave behind the ocean's watery secrets?

So it seems to me that either we should commit to fully descending, or we should commit to not descending at all. The worst option is to descend and then return halfway, suffering whatever injuries or deaths for no gain.

...what happens if we don't go?

I assume we lose, but I can't see any consequences associated with it in the rules.

How many teams do you suppose would take the latter option? If there's enough, we wouldn't have to go that deep.

It would be bad if we got hurt if we didn't have to. But are there SECRET consequences?

I do like exploring though...

Under the sea is a dangerous place. We could descend until the first sign of trouble and then ascend, I suppose. As long as we weren't somehow instantly killed immediately...

Well, apparently Baritones. But I don't know about the rest of them; they might have a similar outlook. There seems to be no penalty for losing if you aren't injured already.

Is it dangerous in your world? One time I went under the sea and we ordered hot dog delivery. It seemed kind of nice!

... I don't trust that they'd just let people not play if they choose without consequences.

In my world, the entire surface of the planet is covered in thick poison fog that we call the 'Sea of Death'.

A knight never shies away from adventure, no matter how dangerous it might be! Also, we need to win, right?

Honestly, not even I'm sure what's beneath those clouds. I've sent probes down, and they were eaten by something.

I don't know if we NEED to.

But we can give it a good try.

In my world the sea is uncharted and full of seaborn terrorfish, which kill or drive insane almost anything that delves too deep!

Oh, but - I heard if you're not entertaining enough you get kicked out of the city?

I don't mind a little risk in life.

Good point. An interesting point to test for science, but there's more science to be had lower down, I bet!

Well, that's the excuse they give, but it seems a bit more complex than that.

Still, I think everyone's decided to at least make the attempt, so I can go with that.
