Capitalism, Hey!: sensitIV

[ Everything fades to black...and you awaken in a run-down one-room shack, with the distinct feeling that the people around you are your family, if you didn't already have such a bond with them.

You're wearing raggedy versions of your uniform, and a newspaper informs you that you are currently in %COUNTRYNAME%, in the year %CONTEMPORARY%. The newspaper is otherwise actually fairly unhelpful, aside from something detailing a recent high-profile murder having been solved: despite confusion on the part of the authorities conducting the initial investigation, it turns out the victim had been tragically murdered via gun in the knife.

What do you do? ]

It is possible to get by without expensive housing. While I prefer it, would it not be better to save as much as we can? Food is the most important thing.

Ah. I read a bit about this period, and this type of economic organization in the books in the library. Ah, even though during this era people were theoretically granted greater liberties than under the feudal and guild-based economic systems of the past, it actually heightened squalor, disrupted communal bonds, and forced the common people to work for up to 14 hours every day in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

...I notice that it is impossible to get all of the necessities without going into debt. I suspect this will not be a pleasant game.

Food and medicine are paramount. I suggest books for luxuries. Perhaps there is some dim chance that the runner will allow us to agitate for better labor conditions, and if that is so, we must better understand our predicament to do so.

If we wanted to save on money, would eating the rats be fine...? It wouldn't be any different from hunting animals in the wild.

I don't really know what the importance of this dynamite is, however. I think we ought to simply leave it.

Books or possibly clothes? I am not partial to our current attire. I agree however that food and medicine are the most important, however.

What about reducing housing in half? Surely we can find something for that little, especially if it is infested with rats.

As for food, how many mouths do we have to feed? It may be wise to see if we can lessen the amount spent on food, too. In particular, if we hunt.

We're manual laborers in a capitalist economy. We cannot hunt or grow our own food. We will need to buy the full amount of food.

The rats likely have diseases. We will buy a couple cats instead.

The dynamite is explosives, I believe. If we leave it, it could collapse the mine, leading to us being out of employment or dying when the roof collapses. If we try to pick it up, it could explode, killing or maiming us.

I would still think that we can get by without buying the whole amount. 900 seems to be an excessive amount of money I feel. I am sure we could reduce it a little bit so long as we buy carefully and still get by. These are merely recommended amounts, right?

Can explosives go off on their own without a trigger? My claw is rather strong and sturdy... I could still try and reach for it if needed. I'm not sure what the better option would be. I don't care to see others hurt.

Well... We could go into debt. Couldn't we? If we think risk/reward, we could maybe.... Do poorly once, keep a little money, then try to do better next round

We work a physically demanding job. I don't think that being malnourished will be in any way to our advantage.

My suggestion is full amount for food and medicine, 200 to housing, 2 units of luxuries, pay taxes, and hope we have some in reserve.

Mm. If it isn't already triggered... I suppose we could give it a try. It would be less risky than chancing the mine being destroyed.

Dynamite usually is made with dry ingredients and so SHOULDN'T go off without ignition. But if we go get it we could get hurt or stuck...

What if we simply decide to live outside and get a tent? Then we wouldn't have to worry about rent, to begin with. I much prefer a bed, but it would only be for the span of this game in the end.

In terms of absolute necessity, we certainly need food - but perhaps when it comes to medicines, we can see about using wildflowers . . . ? That wasn't uncommon back in my life. As for clothes, I don't really see the necessity.

What about sending two of us down with rope? If one is hurt, the other can help, and if both are hurt they can tug the rope to be pulled to safety.

So you feel it is better to simply leave it? I'm not opposed to that. I've never handled such a thing before, so it's difficult to say what's best here.

If the goal is to increase money, we can simply return to renting a house later when we have more money. Ah - and that way we won't have to deal with the infestation either!
