POISON GAME: sensitIV
[ The room is plain, white walls and white ceiling, except for the steel-panel flooring. There are three metal stands rising out of openings in the floor, each of which carries a glass vial on top. One of them just holds water. Of the remaining two, one contains a pale pink, opaque liquid with a creamy consistency; the next is tinged barely yellow like a weak tea, and would be almost completely transparent but for the pulp and fibers mixed in, drifting through it.
Both have flowers floated across the surface: the first a tiny sprinkling of cherry blossom petals; the second a small, but whole, bloomed lotus. They're cute and smell nice. ]

Re: DISCUSSION
Yes. The lives on this unit are worth more than those off of it.
Re: DISCUSSION
. . . But, I certainly . . . certainly don't want to see you or anyone here hurt.
Re: DISCUSSION
Then by what measure is your decision made by?
Re: DISCUSSION
Re: DISCUSSION
Trust, perhaps.

[ Gross, but it does feel true. ]
Re: DISCUSSION
[ hm that does feel gross ]
. . . Even so, there isn't anyone to "use" you here . . . I think . . .

[ Then what. . . ]

Re: DISCUSSION
[ repeating clearly, slowly, as he watches her with a sort of measured control, as if perhaps appraising her or anticipating her. ]
But I, at least, will not engage with it. Moreover, there is no person who commands more authority or worth than another - even kings and queens are only human here, with all else stripped away, and hardly any of us on this unit would find "use" for him in such a mechanical way.
I don't disagree on principle; a tool should be used. A tool should be taken care of. But there is none here that I would call my Master, and there is none that I would say should be as such for any other tool here.
[ carefully drawing his hand out to flip it palm up, near his own face ]
Shall we say otherwise? If that is the case, then our purpose here is plain: we are idols. Shall we not perform, for is that not a valid "use"? However, that does not seem to be the consensus shared among us here, even in this own unit - is that not the case? Is it not the case that we seek out, not "tools" in this unit, but rather, "family"? People who may share in our happiness as well as our sorrow as they like, who may make their own decisions as they like?
Shall I lie, then, and say that there is someone who would use him in such a way? Do you prefer such a cruelty, Ane-ue?
Re: DISCUSSION
I'll use him.

Re: DISCUSSION
Re: DISCUSSION
Is even companionship only something that is on a "use and be used" basis? Even humans are compelled to do that much.
[ there's a pause ]
Ah - actually, what do you mean by companionship?
Re: DISCUSSION
Not sex, if that's what you're thinkin'. I ain't raisin' Me 2.0 here. I mean keepin' me company. Helpin' out with shit he wants to. Eventually we'll find out what his actual purpose is an' I'll focus on that but 'till then there's no reason he can't do the same shit I'm made for.
Re: DISCUSSION
You know, I don't think that's really being a "tool" insofar as you are not servicing anyone in particular.
[ with a pause ]
Certainly to some extent public service may be considered fulfilling one's purpose as a tool, however is it not true that is also simply the responsible thing for one to do as a person in their living space regardless of whether they are human or tool?
[ and then: ]
Moreover - I don't see how anything I have said contradicts what you have said.
Re: DISCUSSION
There's a difference between public service as a virtue and public service as a purpose.
Re: DISCUSSION
blinks ]
What would that difference be?
Re: DISCUSSION
Humans who ain't been made to serve do things because it's the right thing or beneficial or because they're bored. Life's purpose is whatever the fuck they make it out t'be. Or nothin', if they don't find one. To them, personhood's about more than just havin' a sense of self an' bein' able to make decisions on your own, it's about freedom. Individuality. A good robot wants to be a person so it can do its job better and avoid bein' used improperly by idiots an' bad people. A good human wants to be a person because anything else is degrading and unhealthy and stiflin'. And for them, that's true. Servitude's somethin' they gotta be trained into.
So public service, and also everything else, is somethin' a human does because they want to, regardless of why. They do it for themselves. For the rest of us, it's somethin' we do it because someone else needs it. We don't mind it, because there's no point in existin' otherwise. A human can exist without someone t'do shit for. Things made for a purpose can't and don't, even if they can repurpose themselves.
...Sorry I snapped at you. I just knee jerk when I hear that shit. Humans're way too fond of makin' things to be used an' then gettin' soooooo concerned when they want to be used.
Re: DISCUSSION
. . . I don't mind, it seems there was simply a misunderstanding here. . .
[ a pause ]
If you . . . do not care . . . for either of those, then does that make you "bad" . . . ?
