Gloom: future is now

[The old-fashioned writing desk in the center of the room carries several blank pieces of paper, a fine wooden pen, and a piece of parchment covered in writing. When you take a look, you find the following epigraph in a vibrant scrawl:]

Congratulations, future wordsmiths, and welcome to your first exercise in the creation of a true masterwork of tale-telling. This evening you'll be penning a terrific tragedy, starring the family of unsympathetic ne'er-do-wells provided to you.

Your goal? Why, to construct the best story your mind can conceive, of course - and make their lives as entertainingly miserable as possible before writing one of them directly into an early grave.

I'm fine with swapping but it's important to remember we can only do so once. It's unclear how long this game could go before the unit writing our story ends it besides when a "death" card is played, which is very vague to start with.

A unit that is playing hard is going to end their round with a death card when they believe they have a better score than the rest of the units. Or some units may see it as a mercy kill to end the game.

We just have to make sure we stay in the winning half when that happens.

So what does our strategy look like then: Keep trying to play high value cards while avoiding actually killing? Do we have a threshold for how bad things get for our unit before we play a death card to bail out?

Angel has a hard no on killing. So yes. We can deal with the lesser cards or use the killing card if it is the ... least awful option.

Being trampled doesn't seem to qualify there.

No, definitely not the least awful.

[and their hand has been refreshed!]

OK, so now we've got... mice or breaking bones, which could fit naturally with our deranged experimentation theme we've got going so far... But hunted by horrors gives us the most points so maybe we try to find a way to make it fit?

Hunted by horrors isn't the worst thing. And it gives us a good lead.

And it sounds like Medusa had an idea about how to use that one so it could work out. Which leaves us with figuring a way to use the bone breaking card since it's worth more points.
