There's a little bit of cricket-song and cicada-noises, too, but most of the evidence of anything else living outside in this world is the birdsong, trilling high above when everything stills. Somehow it's only one melody at a time, one singular voice, although each time the tone is a little different, as if it's different birds.
They don't get close, though. And in-between you think you might hear someone whispering, again, distantly, from the well. ]
pulling the bucket up again, empty of water; he's taking his phone out too, open to the instructions but more importantly on with its screen light, tying it to the bucket's rope securely before sending the bucket back down
and the cavern below is something larger and deeper than any real well. it might go down forever, into a roughly round cavern full of impossibly tall monuments that are difficult to look at—
Not any kind of scythe you'd do battle with—just something meant for cutting stalks of wheat. The blade gleams in the light, and the handle—
You have to drop it—the handle is metal, and it's been outside in the sun this whole time, hasn't it? So it's gotten hot enough to burn, leaving your palm bright red and stinging. ]
[ all righty. wrapping some cloth around the handle does in fact make it possible to hold, although it... radiates a sort of uncomfortable heat regardless.
