It's a word the Germans have. It means that feeling people have when they think someone else's misfortune is funny. It's such a normal feeling for people to have that there's a word for it.
That doesn't mean that it's always a good thing, but I think you're the kind of person who already knows that. I bet if I asked you to think of situation where someone being hurt could never be funny, you can think of a dozen. That's the part you always listen to in the end, right? The part of you that knows when you have to care about people.
