it does not matter "who" he is. this identity, this existence, this self—when was it that he cared about that? who "he" is?

his life was only for those who followed him—this life now is only because of those who followed him. he is not himself, not for himself; he is, was, and always will be for those who passed on—for those he failed, for those who lost their lives for him.

and for what—for this? this place is empty, the people are gone; whether his people ever made it here is a wonder, and if anything he's heard before means anything, it's possible they never made it here in the first place.

it burns, in his veins and in his wrists, his ankles, his throat, his back, his flesh, his feet—but his heart burns too, and so his jaw burns with his teeth clenched so tightly.

O Lord, he starts, as he feels himself burn away;

I won't ask for anything from You anymore. ]

[ And it all burns, truly—it sears through your veins and flesh and even seems to leech into your bone marrow, rushing through and leaving behind warmth.

Underwater, every sound is muted, leaving only you with the steady thudding of your heart. And it is your heart—the one God gave to you; the heart you were given to serve those around you. The heart that must carry forward, purified, until your work is complete.

When you next resurface, you feel more whole—and at the same time, as though you've lost something. You know the deal. ]

Don't make Persephone mad again. You know how scary he gets.

Suddenly, it stops—that is, the pain stops. You're able to move again, just as you see a clear blue sky and . . . the ground rapidly approaching. ]
