If you really thought that, then would you have really made a protection plan for all the units?
It might not work. Everyone might get punished instead. The easiest thing to get behind would really be just to have one unit be the target of every bad game.
Hell, some units have even tried to make themselves the target. It'd be the best for everyone to just go along with it, right?

But choosing something for yourself isn't selfishness if you've got people who want to see you happy.
