And then there’s a voice, saying:

And something, ready or not, is thrust into your hand. Maybe it’s a pen, or a brooch, or a watch or a phone, or anything at all so long as it’s small enough to hold, and looks too important to lose.

Maybe you try to object, but a small, winged creature wreathed in iridescent sparkles darts into your view, and clasps your hands, and curls your fingers tight about the object in them.

You’re just, the creature says, going to have to trust me. Now: raise your hand, and say:

Maybe you know these tropes, or maybe you don’t.
Maybe you’re about to protest that no, you couldn’t possibly, this is ridiculous and you’ve got the wrong person—

But you can’t resist the call. Nobody ever can.

And then?

Then? It’s not dark any more.

And an awful lot seems to be happening at once.

The water bubbles, boils – dark as it is, you can see that. See the too-still sea start to churn as something moves, moves, swift and inexorable, up and up and up…

The surface breaks, salt water cascading down in sheets as she rears from the depths. Slick and scaled, massive and unknowable as Leviathan, she uncoils in a single devastating rush, shimmering arms outstretched as she rises up on her tail. Her eyes are dark and marbled and depthless, like fish’s eyes. Her hair is an oil slick hung heavy with pearls, and when she opens her deep blue lips it is to reveal a mouth full of row upon row of needlelike teeth. The sea holds its breath; she draws hers.

[He jumps back a little, movements quick and reflexive, before shooting a glance at Thorn. Team attack? Team attack.]

Time to finally show our stuff, huh?

[It's just a little bravado - this is a magical girl fight, after all. With a quick if mostly superfluous gesture of his hand, he'll even trace a (meaningless) symbol in the air before firing off a jet of flames towards the creature.]

[He seems... oddly unperturbed with weird demons rising up from the bubbling darkness. Kind of like it's just Thursday. Huh]

[Michelle is very pleased that you called out the move name, she would have had something to say if you hadn't.

[Water creatures like the Siren really don't take too well to having bolts of fire flung at them. The water steams and hisses as it evaporates off her scales where they strike, her tail thrashes the water as she pulls back - but not quite enough, not enough that she's safe.]

[Also, she is calling out her attack names. Or, uh, singing them really, so no judgement here!]

[No, it is not immediately clear what that means.

[Except then she rears back, spreading her arms wide, and it is absolutely obvious what that means. A massive wave rises from the depths behind her, rolling toward you both, crashing down heavily on your heads. You'll be lucky to keep your feet, after this.

[He goes down, sure enough, taking 2 damage - but it's not about whether you get knocked down, is it? It's about whether you get up]

[He grits his teeth and struggles back to his feet - calls out again:]

[6+6+6+1 for a perfect attack. Suck it, daemon!!!]

[2 damage - he tries to throw up a shield of flame, but he can't get it in front of him in time to block out that water.

Hissing in pain, he glances to Thorn to make sure they're lining up their attacks before he waves a hand again, summoning a fiery rain upon her in retaliation.]

Meteorite!

[That scream could shatter glass.

[Fortunately it is not rated as an attack! It's just a very dramatic demonstration of precisely how much ass was just kicked there, thank you Thorn.

[She falls back against the waves with a mighty crash, sinking beneath the waters to salve her wounds before resurfacing, rearing back tall again. This is not going how she planned it at all, but she's not giving up just yet.]

♫~Shining Anthem~!!

[Oh, yeah, and she sees you have company. The sudden arrival of reinforcements has not been taken at all well.

[A barrage of bubbles is blasted at all four of you. They spin like cannonballs, and they'll burst on impact, knocking you to the floor - but they have to hit you first.]

[ appearing from on high, descending— ]

Umbra Phantom Blast!

[ magical warrior shrike appears.

and kicks the monster in the head.

[But you know what? He is used to soaking up damage. He is shoving himself up to his feet and wading back in - gritting his teeth]

Bubbles?! Lame... Hyperion Lance!

[materializing and launching that earth lance again.

[This time he manages to jump out of the way, checking Thorn before launching fireballs right back.]

Burning blossom!

[She screams. No: she wails, clawing at her throat, ripping her own flesh with her talonlike nails. Ichor bubbles on her lips, seeps from the sockets of her eyes, it gushes from the gouges at her neck, staining the water about her black on black. Spluttering, dying, tail thrashing against the water, she falls slowly at first, slow and deliberate as a building being toppled, then crashes back beneath the waves, kicking up vast plumes of seafoam and seawater as she falls. Her hands claw for the surface for a moment: the sea gives a swallow, and she sinks beneath the surface one last time.

[Breathe.

[It might take a moment to notice it, but there’s the thing you’ve been missing – the gentle sigh of waves lapping the shore. And, on the horizon, there’s a brilliant seam of gathering light.]

Well... another one down.

[She points back over your shoulder.]
