Murder Mysterium - Night 2, Conservatory

[ ALCHEME! and SEA.DI enter.

Outside the domed glass of the conservatory, night has fallen. The sky here is dark, clouded over with clouds so low as to feel claustrophobic-- the sort of weather and sort of place where a conservatory to retreat to would be welcome, to feel some sort of warmth that the sky stubbornly refuses to provide. Efforts have been made to make the place seem as bright and airy as possible, despite this: the sunburst pattern in the metal framework, the greening copper giving the place some brightness where wrought iron would make the place feel like a cage. Green and gold tiles circle an artificial pond, encircled themselves by shelves, lined with pots, overflowing with devil's ivy. Citrus perfumes the air. A small tea-table has been set up, with chairs for two or three to retreat to.

There isn't anything different beyond the usual decor of the room. However, the longer AlcheME! stays, the more keenly aware they become of the quiet but steady tick-tick-tick in the background. There isn't a clock that makes that noise in sight . . . what could it be?

Perhaps sea.Di knows. Regardless, everyone in the room knows this: before the dawn comes, AlcheME! will die. Even if it is not directly by sea.Di's hand, AlcheME! lost the moment they entered. ]

Its amazing how often people will go on long tirades to justify why they should be allowed to murder kids.

I get your world has a long, bloody, complicated history. But Lark hasn't done any of that.

He's innocent. And I will not let him be hurt for crimes he never did. Maybe you should learn to break the programming over the leash if you're that angry.

Because I don't care how hurt you are. You hurt him, you deal with me, and I've fought a lot scarier then you without any abilities.

I'll accept the game's outcome. You try for more, then you will get more.

[ she growls, tail going completely rigid at "break the programming". ]

Do not speak about things you do not and cannot understand, child. No - you're a tyrant too, aren't you? After all, you see fit to use the very same words they do, to mock those they know full well they can simply force to submit! You disrespect each and every one of my brothers and sisters by suggesting that they - what, simply destroy their own souls? Oh, but of course - the tyrants had no problem doing that themselves! After all, they could just get a new pet. One that can be groomed to love them unconditionally, just as they'd like! And when inevitably that one remembers what has been done to those who came before, well - time to discard that one as well! It is laughable that you think they even allow us to stay hostile enough to even die on our own terms, much less -

[ and then she just sort of stumbles forward with a dogwhine, trembling - before taking a deep breath, steadying herself, and straightening again. ]

This beast apologizes for losing its composure.

This is not a justification. It is an explanation.

And he is no child, nor should you treat him like one. Even if he did not directly participate in the Deliberative, he stood by and allowed his fellows to bleed Creation dry. I will brook no testimony regarding his innocence unless it is from his Lunar, and even only with the promise that he is not holding his Lunar's leash and guiding its words.

You will die defending him. This is not in question. This beast was created to march at the forefront of the armies that cleaved asunder darkness itself so that the sun could shine upon the land. He and I are both leagues beyond anything you could muster, even in this place where our respective blessings are diminished. You will die to fail defending someone infinitely more capable of defending himself than you could ever hope to be. This is regrettable, and if you were not so inclined toward excusing the system he upholds, I would think you one of Luna's children yourself.

As it is, I can only imagine you are underestimating him. This is a mistake. He is far more than you ever could be. He is an instrument of the Unconquered Sun, and he will do what is right in the eyes of heaven, even if that is not what is best. He is prosperity, and he is destruction. Die pointlessly for him if you wish, in the name of your empty ideals, but do not disrespect what a glorious thing he is by claiming he is too pure and innocent and powerless to face his past.

[He shifts, tense, but still loose, ready to move, very much the picture of someone who knows how to fight.]

[He doesn't move to attack though, ready to defend.]

Skylark doesn't run from his choices. But if you hold every...last life or ancestor or whatever against the person, what does that leave you in the end? Just a world where someone believes its all right to murder a kid.

I'm sorry for the pain your people went through. But that isn't justification. And that isn't permission.

I don't care how hurt you are, or what you think he is, or what he has the potential to be. As he is right here, right now?

He's done nothing worth what you want to put him through. The events you're talking about happened before he was born as himself.

I'm just making things clear to you where it stands. I'm protecting him from being hurt beyond what this stupid game is forcing. And if you're determined to do that....

Well, you're not the first to try.

[The biggest irony: He is also chosen by the sun.]
