"...You may have the right of it regarding the manner in which you were brought here, but you are not forced to stay. He at least retains enough of himself to let people go if they do not wish to help."

    Tsun!!

"As for what you may need to do... Are you familiar with the legend of the phoenix? A common concept across many worlds, it appears. Mayhap it exists in yours as well."

Sorry as an Ascian he can't really. Just explain things from the get-go.

[Levity, why is your heart like this.]

Even if it did, our stories could be different, so you might as well explain it.

    He's an Ancient!!!

    "Very well."

"In our world, the "phoenix" was created as a concept - an idea given form. It was meant to be simply a healing magick in avian guise. But as fate had it, the magick fused with a drifting soul making its journey to the Underworld, where all life returns. It was fearful, confused, burdened with sorrow and regret. With its newfound powers of healing, the soul within the "phoenix" would thrash blindly, destroying itself again and again, reviving itself again and again. The man you may know as "Alexander", one of the greatest mages of his time, was called in to deal with it, for only he possessed enough strength to be able to set the soul to rest."

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
...So Levity's feelings of sorrow and regret are being represented by a phoenix, which I need to help you deal with here?

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 04:22 am (UTC)(link)

"Correct. I fear I cannot tell you how to deal with it exactly. If these were matters he could have resolved himself, you would not have been called here."
    quickpersuader: (where are)

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
So whatever you did in reality to deal with the phoenix can't be done here? Or is it just not the solution?

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 04:41 am (UTC)(link)

"'Tis not the solution, no. He grieves because of his inability to save his people during the fall of Amaurot. Painful though it is, would you truly tell him to discard that memory? Send it away?"
    quickpersuader: (turns into a cloud)

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
So dealing with the phoenix was just a matter of sending it away in your world?

    [Well then.]

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 04:52 am (UTC)(link)

"Letting the soul return to the Underworld, yes. It was not meant to stay in the world of the living."

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Sssssssigh. They think they have a pretty decent picture of what's going on now, at least.]

Then I guess I'll get going. Do you have any advice?

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 04:57 am (UTC)(link)

    Hmmm.

"Do what you believe to be right."

    ...

    ...

    ...

Oh, the temptation is too great, and he is still a piece of Levity.

"And do not eat expired Twinkies."
    quickpersuader: (I hide the tears)

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Even if what I believe is right is opposed to Levity's own sense of morality?

    [Like just sayin

That's a risk you're running by making other people do your therapy, buddy
    ]

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 05:04 am (UTC)(link)

    ...

"If you were speaking with him face to face, and he asked for your advice - would you not say what you believe to be right? What you believe to be true?"
    quickpersuader: (we travel the world)

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. But in that situation, I'm only saying the things I believe. He has the choice of whether or not he wants to take it or leave it.

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 05:09 am (UTC)(link)

"And if he does not? If he rejects it? Do you believe your words would not have left their mark nevertheless?"
    quickpersuader: (the wind)

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but that's a little different from messing around in his heart, with manifestations of his feelings, in whatever way I decide.

I'm not a therapist. Nor am I anyone particularly qualified to help with matters of the heart. I'm just Kino - someone who happened to be drawn into this. And depending on my actions, from what I understand, it could completely change his outlook on life without any input from him.

"Do not think him so feeble. And know that you are not the only one called here. Others have and will tread this path to help him as well."

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
You did say he's losing his perception of himself as a person.

    [Sounds pretty feeble to them!]

Anyway, like I said, I'll go. But don't blame me if you don't like the results.

how much gun is kino going to do

"'Tis not my place to blame anyone. Inaction will destroy him. You might save him. Between certain death and uncertain salvation, is the choice not clear?"
    quickpersuader: (so the...)

[Apparently very little since if I go with that they only get one bullet!!]

    Fine.

[Sigh! But they'll move along towards the fire now.]

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
The street that led you here stops abruptly - and from here you can see a square below, the buildings surrounding it ablaze, and in the center of the square... a giant firebird. It looks injured, a wing hanging limply - but even as you watch, a glow surrounds the creature, mending the wing.

But it's a pointless endeavor. As soon as it's healed, the bird gives a screech, rising up into the air... and almost immediately throwing itself at the surrounding buildings, not caring about the injuries to itself. Again the glow, the healing, again the mindless thrashing; repeat, repeat, repeat.

    A sad and gruesome sight.
    quickpersuader: (we can hear it)

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
[They'll watch this go on for a bit, waiting until the phoenix is in one of its healing cycles.]

    Hey!

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't seem to notice them at first have you tried being less tiny, but as it prepares to take off again the phoenix seems to realize there's a new speck of colour down there? For a few moments it pauses, trying to focus on Kino.

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] quickpersuader 2021-06-06 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you doing this to yourself?

[They shout it, voice calm and clear.]

    Re: WESTWARD OF TIME

    [personal profile] weenwoon 2021-06-06 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
The firebird screams at the sky before beating its wings down once. A gust of searing hot wind speeds through the square, and as the heat envelopes Kino they'll get brief snatches of images and feelings - the weight of a small lifeless body in their arms, rage, grief, despair, confusion, a city ablaze.
