Once, there was a maiden...

Great black stags chased her, and their eyes shone blue.
Monsters scrambled after her through the bush, though they found her not.
Stumbling on a log, she fell and thought to surrender, and end the torment of the hunt—

"Oh, good. I was starting to think there was nothing I can do about all this. You're here to wake up the boy, right?"

Oh—so you know what's going on, then. I wasn't sure if anyone apart from that girl on the beach would. But—yeah, that's about the score.

"She was probably pretty annoyed that she had to explain shit to a bunch of people, so you can consider me the one who knows exactly what's going on here, yes."

So—okay. This is his perfect dream, basically. Dream world, and the point is to convince him to go home...

...but also, he's re-experiencing the death of a close family member.

"That's right. To be accurate, this is an 'ideal world' where he has nothing to worry about. No responsibilities he's beholden to, and no pressing matters that make him anxious over himself, the world or anyone else."

He frowns. "But pretending they aren't there doesn't mean they're actually gone."

...yeah, I guess.

That kind of thing is always going to catch up to you, somehow.

"Normally it's my job to straighten him out on this sort of thing, but I can do fuck all when he refuses to perceive me at the moment. I have no choice but to rely on the rest of you for this."

He sounds really annoyed that all of these problems basically have to be solved via proxy.

"If you have any other questions, I'll try my best to answer them."

...well, first of all, who are you?

There's a pause as he considers how he wants to phrase this. "The person I'm based on is his teacher. What I actually am is... his 'critical thinking' and 'integrity'. Those are the most suitable terms."

...so, it's that kind of metaphor.

I think... people probably are inclined to lean away from those things when they're in the throes of a difficult emotion, though. And it seems like he might be.

"When he's willing to settle for a totally normal, idyllic life, he definitely is. That's why I can't do shit. I can't even leave the shadow without vanishing into thin air."

Damn, I was going to ask about that next, since I know where he is.

Though it seems like finding him is the least-hard part. Do you know what he cares about more than a totally normal life? I guess if that's a thing that's attractive, he must live something... not normal.

"Oh, you have no idea."

That says pretty much everything that needs to be said about Lark's life.

"It's more that...it's an idea he sometimes thinks about or indulges in. It sounds nice, especially right now, but a completely 'normal' life probably wouldn't be the most fulfilling for him. What he cares about more than that are the people he loves and his sense of 'rightness'."

[ ......... ]

...well, isn't that pretty normal, even so? But—

I guess, then, it's something like needing to remind him of what still isn't right?

"Something like that. He has some promises to keep with the real people out there, so he could stand to be reminded of that, too."

"...I don't have anything that can be given as 'proof' to him, but the others do, if you can persuade them to trust you or whoever else is running around with them. Or, well. There are some other things underground, but they're not exactly gentle."

...well, Kino can probably handle that kind of thing, so it's for the best they went down there, I guess.

And, anyway.

I'm very trustworthy. So don't worry about it.

A beat.

"Wait, someone went down there already?" But if this person says they can handle it, all he can do is trust in that. It's a little too late to do anything about it now.

"Every time someone says 'trustworthy' and 'don't worry about it' in quick succession, it somehow isn't terribly reassuring." There's no heat at all to it however, so he probably isn't being completely serious.

Kino said they'd prefer it over having to talk to people. But really, I'm sure it'll be fine.

"If you say so."

These two, unaware of what's happening down below. "Anything else?"

[ it's fine. she trusts kino implicitly. they are both very normal ]

Well, I think I'd best get a move-on, if I'm going to get this done. I'll pop by again if I have more questions.
