Skylark's Ideal World | Session 1

Once, there was a maiden...
...who was driven from her land.
Great black stags chased her, and their eyes shone blue.
Monsters scrambled after her through the bush, though they found her not.
Stumbling on a log, she fell and thought to surrender, and end the torment of the hunt—

... ... ...

You're so, so tired.

[ you're dead. without a moment of hesitation, he reaches out to her. ]

Un...less you saw. Come with me, please? It's important.

She doesn't stop him just yet, but she doesn't take his hand, either.

"What is it?"

It's Lark.

[ not trying to be menacing here, but he's maintaining his stance. ]

He needs help. If I'm not explaining it well, then I'll just need to show you.

Another pause. This time, it's easier to tell that she's deliberating over this.

"How will I help him, then?"

You're his mother. You know him better than most people. Why wouldn't you do anything you could to? Even if I don't know the hows, you might know something about him that I don't.

[ he's patient, he is, but also ready to pull her along. the real version is dead. and yet, she's here.

The serene, gentle smile appears, and doesn't leave.

"Goodness. You're quite persistent, dear. You're hoping that he'll be able to say goodbye to me, am I wrong?"

So you do know, and you've been using up time.

[ he can feel his jaw clenching. ]

This isn't real. His mother wanted him to live, and this isn't it. So tell me... what would she have told him, if she could see him paralyzed with fear under the weight of obligation?

Even as she watches Okitsu tense up, she doesn't stop smiling. But an air of sadness settles over her.

"...You must understand that I'm not really her. Merely an 'ideal' and 'representation' of her and what she means to him. I can't tell what he isn't sure of himself."

"But I think it would be best if he could begin to accept that she is gone, and there is a future with others waiting for him."

... I know it would be. But I think it'd mean a lot to him too, to be able to say goodbye. And that he's going to be okay.

[ but maybe it's too much to ask. ]

One last thing, then. Does the blue — your dress — does it mean anything? Crane had a blue hair accessory.

When she tilts her head in response to Okitsu's question, her smile softens a touch. "Where we're from, blue is the colour of serenity. It is said that only when you know serenity that you can experience joy. I have a question for you in return, dear."

Nobody ever does... But the loss of someone you love, it can't- it can't consume you.

She folds her hands in her lap.

"... Since you and the others are trying to wake him up -- should he wake, what do you intend to do?"

Not let him bear it alone. Whatever's coming. Whatever it is he has to deal with.

I want to be there with him. I don't want- another person to destroy themselves alone. Not if there's something I can do. [ beat. ]

I'll get him something blue, too. Thanks for the info.

She giggles. "Do be mindful of what kind of gift you get him. 'Romance' brings joy, too." If you catch her drift.

But, seemingly satisfied with Okitsu's answer, she reaches into her dress to pull out...a familiar little lacquer gift box. "Then, I suppose I can entrust you with this."

[ he reaches out for it, holding it to his chest. will it help? will it hurt? he really can't say, nor will he open it. ]

... And I'm- sorry. [ he knows she isn't truly his mom by her own admission, and yet he cannot help but empathize with the apparition before him before he turns to head back for the cottage. ]

"Good luck, dear."

If he dares to turn back to take a look after this -- there will be no one there.

Otherwise, you may proceed to the COTTAGE.
