Welcome to your opportunity of becoming a dragon rider. It is a great honor to join our ranks, but its also extremely dangerous. If you are not prepared to commit to your partnership, it could cost you life or limb.

But rider implies that one individual holds more power in the relationship.

If our dragons didn't want us to ride them, they would make it known. It wouldn't be much for Stormfly to just dump me into the sea.

Ah, I see. So it is about mutual trust and understanding between the two parties. And the only reason it is titled "rider" is because one half of the partnership can fly and the other cannot.

Though I am trying to live a mortal human life now, I could play that role. I just do not know if my understanding of being human is enough to properly facilitate the type of relationship or interaction you are looking for.

Most likely not. From what Hiccup said, dragons are a lot rarer in others world and end up being actual deities in some.
But he figures its a bit like how it is with humans being other humans. Sure, there's stark differences, but there's still a lot of understanding. Working from a baseline instead of something wholly alien.
A halfway point isn't a bad thing. It might still work out okay. The dragon's pack is still on the island, so you'd still be around a lot. You might be able to see where things are going right or really wrong with your perspective.

I don't know if being human will make it hard for them to recognize you as a dragon. Still, you should disarm completely. Its very important when a human first meets them.
