You hear a chime, like a clock sounding the hour. Has it only been that long? No, it can't have been, it must've been longer ... right? Oh well. You're out of time, and now you're here.

Here is a liminal space. It's like a washed out version of the Entrance Hall, so big and fancy, with its high vaulted ceilings and polished oakwood floors, intricate detailing, and the ornate front door. Everything else is shrouded by fog. You can try to find the other doors, you can try to find the foyer, but ... they're not there? Walk more than a minute into the fog and you'll find yourself right back where you started.

The giant bat was first, all I had to fight that were my hands and teeth, and it bit me back and gashed my face open until I tore its wing off. Then the giant spider which had a really hard shell and really sharp pincers, it chewed on my face and arm and leg and then it stole my knife and stabbed me with it before I finally ripped it up. Then there was the fire monster in the kitchen, but we gave up on that one when water made it explode.

It was attacking my companion, so I went at it hard. [ It was about 60% about territoriality and a show of dominance, which was achieved when she ripped it in half, but when you fight with your fangs your face is in the line of fire. ]

I don't need a bond with someone to want them to be safe. We were in this together.

Sure was! I don't mind a few injuries if it keeps everyone else out of the line of fire, so to speak. It's not like it matters. [ she can't articulate why it doesn't matter, but she knows deep down that her injuries won't really damage her in the long term ]

Wow you're as cynical as they come, aren't you? [ She doesn't seem amused by this exactly, just noting it as a thing and generally being in a good mood (until she's not) ]

I dunno, I'm thinkin' it's pretty normal not to wanna sacrifice yourself for some people you barely even know.

Normal and cynical don't have to be... what's the phrase for when two things aren't always separate? Mutual-something.

I mean, believing that most people would choose their own self-interest over helping someone is pretty much the definition of cynical, isn't it? But if I got it wrong, I don't mind being corrected.

It's more of a distinction between the brave heroes and the normal populace, ain't it?

Heroes are considered special 'cause that's not how most people'd behave. They're the ones with the guts to do somethin' like that.

Just reckless. Isn't it more heroic to figure out what the situation is and how best to help rather'n potentially gettin' yourself killed for no reason?
