Heart Game: Duality - Round 1

Your sleep is restless, and it's hard to settle as your eyelids refusing to stop twitching, and you can feel an itch at the back of your mind, flashes of uncomfortable thoughts dipping in and out of your dreams, constantly interrupting your tries to relax. ... Are you even asleep?

...

Apparently you were, because you wake up with a start, cheek pressed uncomfortably to steel flooring and flickering lights overhead. Unfortunately, you don't feel very rested at all.

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

This room is a huge, no, VAST cave. It’s covered in ice and snow, jagged black and blue icicles protruding from almost every available surface, a blueish dark light illuminating the space. It’s almost pretty in a way, but it feels cold and oppressive. It’s clear now that this is the barred off area you saw when you entered the basement, as the bars are visible further ahead. In the middle of all this ice is a dark lake. It’s iced over but it looks precariously thin. What looks like a slab of rock sticks out from the middle of the lake, and upon closer inspection you can see a cat, tightly curled up on it, shivering against the cold. If you look closer at the lake, you can see shapes of items on the bottom, clearly things that don’t belong there.

You could risk stepping across the ice for the cat, even break the ice to get to the items on the bottom of it, or you could choose to take the long way around the lake to get to the other side and get out of here. The air is freezing after all, and you don’t want to stay here for too long.

On the other side of the lake stands a figure, completely still, almost like a statue.

There are two doors... openings? One on each side of the lake. One of them is the one you just came from.

[Shivers, rubbing his arms as he looks around, trying to take everything in. He heads towards the lake looking between whatever the hell is living at the bottom and that cat...]

Well. Shit.

[Sighs, teleporting over to the slab of rock]

[The cat startles as you appear in front of it and raises it's hackles with a hiss, skidding back a little bit. It looks soaked to the bone and probably took a dip in the lake at some point.

Whatever is at the bottom of the lake is just a mishmash of strange shapes barely visible under the ice. Nothing's moving though so at least there's nothing alive down there.]

[Holds out his hand so the cat can sniff]

Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you.

[It takes a few moments before it dares to take one step forward, and then another so it can carefully sniff your hand. It's still shivering, and looks pretty miserable.]

[Skritching behind the ears with big warm hands]

Wanna come with me in my jacket? It'll be warmer there than on this rock.

[It lets out a weak sounding mewl, and soon it's butting its entire head against Silver's hand, stepping closer.]

[Cool, gonna tuck this kitten in his jacket to keep it warm]

[It curls up really close for warmth, tucking itself as close as it can, head nuzzled against Silver's clavicle, right underneath his chin.

You have acquired 1+ damp and slightly cold cat!

What now?]

[Teleporting towards the figure! Cat in tow]

[You appear right next to the figure, cat and all.

The figure that turns out to be Duality himself, only with his entire left side covered in black crystalline spikes, half his face obscured by a grim mask with a row of jagged teeth.]

...Duality?

[Duality turns to look at him, eyes widening at first before his expression morphs back into blank.]

Silver...! You... you shouldn't be here. It's dangerous. Go back.

Yeah, how about no.

[He looks down at the cat tucked into Silver's jacket and then back up to him.]

You... you saved it.

You still shouldn't be here. I don't want to hurt you.

You wouldn't hurt me.

You don't know that. I've already... I...

I do know that though.

By what proof?

I'm not the forgive and forget type. If you'd wronged me, I wouldn't be here right now.

Look at me!

[As he raises his voice, something flashes and a shard of black ice erupts from the ground between them.]

Everyone gets hurt because of me, because of this place. Because I'm useless! Nothing I've done can be forgiven.

You're not useless.

I couldn't even save...

[a helpless gesture to the cat which in all honesty is just another part of his emotions, really. shards of ice are spiking out of his hand, slowly growing over his skin]

...I cannot do what you did. I'm weak.

You're not weak, you're human. We all need help sometimes.

I'm supposed to be a hero. But if I can't even save my friends if they're in danger, if I... if I'm the reason they're hurt... how can I call myself a hero? I'll never be good enough.

[He curls his arm closer to himself, curling in on himself as he speaks, trying to stop more ice shards erupting around him, on him.]

Leave! You'll get hurt, I don't... I can't...!
