Many questions, but good questions. You can come back to this, but they aren't all boards.
It is a wild card, but it's wild within reason. I'm not sure fashion has anything to do with John. And I can help with symbols, but I think you would enjoy it more if you figured them out on your own.
I think I can guess a few of them, like the boat and the farm. These are things that are important to him. Some of these may be things he's struggling with, like... this sitting guy looks lonely. Maybe he's dealing with loneliness, and has turned to alcohol, which is a common enough vice around here. Hence the bottle symbol.
Often white represents things that are good and black is bad, so maybe if I put the things that I think he likes on the white squares...?
[he moves some pieces around. now there are seven]
...This puzzle doesn't have just one right answer, does it?
Not all things that are significant are good things.
The boat is... his boat? The one he made. That he can use to go fishing with now -- that's the fish. Does he like fishing? He seems like the type.
The farm is his farm, or the hobby of farming.
The flower is ... maybe LiliS, or one of his unitmates in particular? And the fox is maybe Wild City, or maybe Silver.
Skull is death... maybe a desire for self-destruction, or a fascination with death, or a desire to harm others.
The bird is peace [HE HAD TO LEARN THAT SYMBOLISM AFTER E GRADUATED, PLS BE PROUD OF HIM]. So maybe that's the desire for a calm life, and a home like this. [gesturing at the room]
The light is maybe... emergencies? Like his first aid class, or getting called on to help when things go sideways.
The dog could be animals. He seems like he really likes them, by the way he talks about them. Occasionally I've seen him taking care of the horses, and he tells me to show respect when I talk about them, too.
Heart is love, and the pursuit thereof? And the group of people could be a sense of belonging. In his unit, or a desire for camaraderie.
The crossed fingers could be... luck? Lying? I'm not sure about that one.
The clock could be passage of time... he's been here a long time. Maybe he's waiting to leave.
I'm not sure what the fist could be. Determination? The desire for power?
Crossed fingers is a way of showing hope in our world. Cultural differences shouldn't impede progress, but the clock . . . You've been here longer. Do you think he wants to leave?
I guess I don't really know. The alternative is staying here, and while this place can suck sometimes, there are definitely worse places to be. So I guess I don't really know.
...It occurs to him that he completely forgot about the concept of mortality.
Perhaps he has been in Hell too long.
Do we have ends coming????? How do we even define endings here? He's not certain any more.]
Ah, okay. "The opposite of peace..." Close but no cigar, huh?
All of these concepts have a place in the human experience. So I guess this board isn't "the human experience" or it would be able to contain them all.
So maybe the board really is like chess -- a game?
Can I make the block into the group of people? With the symbolism here being a sense of belonging, camaraderie, solidarity, or the ability to form meaningful human connections.
I wish him a rich and happy life, surrounded by those who care about him, who he cares about in turn.
You're welcome. And our relationship is — Complicated. Once upon a time, he loved me. Now? He trusts me to be warden over him, not much love in it, but I know that he needs someone, even now.
Kind of wish he asked before he assigned me this role, but . . . No, Cobalt, I'm fine, thank you. What I need I can get on my own. You don't have to worry about that.

You can see the layers underneath. What do those mean? Especially if this is meant to be things he likes.

The fist is maybe the opposite of the bird? Fighting, power, strength, aggression, ambition.
The clock is time, or waiting...?
S-sorry, that's all I've got.

And the clock is mortality. All of you have an end or two coming to you, don't you? He's acutely aware of that.
Now, knowing all those pieces, which belong to this board?

Ah... before I go... May I ask what your relation to John is? I'm guessing you're someone from his past?
[Or a LiliS who came and went before he had a chance to meet them, as many of them do]
