He knew someone close to him would have medical problems, so he studied and they eventually became useful when there was an emergency. Then, someone made a mess of everyone in a trial 'game', so the need became very obvious. Doesn't help that every doctor you've had has had some level of psychopathy, but that kind of goes with the territory.
