Heart Game: Hurricane - Run 3

[At first, all is still; all is silent.]

[The only light is the light from your phone, where a checklist has taken over the screen. It reads:]

___ Make a change
___ Repair something
___ Protect something
___ Find the True Heart
___ Survive

[Then the light comes up, bright, and then brighter, and you are in…]

[ Though she rolls a 21 on int this time around, while surveying the damage ]

... Someone said some very harsh things about our unit. That's... probably a part of it. But... I'm sure if we take this piece by piece, at least this problem can be fixed. Stuffing can be put back in--and I know how to sew.

[ The tip of her tail twitches a bit. ]

So all of this is like... what happened because of what some jerk said?

Well--certainly not all of his heart's issues. ... Probably not all of this particular metaphor's, either.

[ hesitates; looks around ]

Hurricane and I have been here from the beginning. We've seen people come and go.... and a lot of bad things happen to our unit for various reasons. And sometimes... there have been disagreements--conversations that he'd like to avoid. It's not easy, living with five or more people who all have different thoughts and feelings about how things should be done. I imagine as we work, we'll find out more.

[ whether he wants them to or not. ]

[ She casts her eyes around the destruction in the room. She'd honestly had no idea Hurricane had this many issues with his team.

Would her own heart-dorm look similar...? ]

So if we fix it, it'll bug him less? That's how this stuff is supposed to work, right?

That's the hope, i think--that it will give him the fortitude to be able to put the hurts behind him and move on. And maybe... reassure him that things aren't as awful as he's been feeling.

[ Her tail snaps back and forth a few times, some combination of anxious and restless. ]

This heart stuff is the worst.

Fine, I'll do some dumb chores.

At least there aren't anymore monsters. ... For what it's worth, I really appreciate all your help.

[It seems to you that Hiryuu has the right idea. It seems like a lot, all taken at once, but piece by piece, you can probably do something about it.]

[You might be able to find replacements for the things that are broken or missing in other places in the heart, as well.]

[ Well then.

Guess she's going to join Hiryuu in trying to gather up all the bits of stuffing, shoving them back in wherever she can, until the fluff no longer covers the floor. ]

[The work goes quickly enough. Soon, the floor is free of mattress fluff.]

[ Times like this, it's good she was raised in a strict military barracks.

Not that she followed the rules 90% of the time, but that was a deliberate choice.

Either way, she moves on quickly from the mattresses once they're in a state that Hiryuu can sew them up, pausing at the glass shards on the floor beneath the picture. One at a time she starts plucking them between her claws and dropping them in her open palm, until all of it can be discarded. ]

[It isn't long before the glass is cleared away, though the picture is a little crooked, like someone hung it in haste.]

[ WOW LAZY.

She flicks it with her tail as she goes past, straightening it, and dumps the glass wherever they're collectively putting trash for disposal.

And then considers the room at large. ]

. . . Man, do these screens even do anything, or are they just for the dumb theme . . .

[As soon as your fingertips brush the wood of the frame, a wave of feeling washes through you, so sudden and intense that it takes your breath away. It starts sweet and low, a warm glow somewhere deep in your chest - a sense of belonging, of contentment.]

[It doesn't last. It twists, and lurches sideways, a shock that feels like missing a step in the dark, on a staircase you thought you knew well. There's a hole, suddenly, where all that warmth used to be, and other things rush in to fill it: shame, and a bone-deep disappointment in yourself, and the aching certainty that of course you'd gotten it wrong.]
