[Well. Maybe the dining room stuff will actually stick around. He helps himself to a couple of sandwiches and some finger foods, kind of listening in on the conversation while he does.]
[ you stack up a whole plate with the food; it all looks incredible. a great many people seem to be discussing business endeavors, and the trading of favors; the group with the one non-human guest is discussing politics, though. There seems to have been a recent rebellion in one of the colonies the British Crown holds on Mars, and colonial forces have blockaded the city. ]
[ They continue talking; apparently the city refuse to surrender despite their water being briefly turned off from the upstream canal in Syrtis Major, and in spite of a steady stream of refugees trickling out. First-Keeper Naarabot apparently refuses to surrender, and is apparently getting support from such controversial elements such as the Maozooni and the Grand Army of Free Mars. IT seems things will escalate to a real conflict, soon; there'll surely be bloodshed.
A lovely conversation to be had over canapes, surely. The one nonhuman in this conversation looks like they'd really rather be anywhere else. ]
[ the personage looks faintly startled. they speak in a languid accent with slightly off-kilter vowels that sounds like a more exaggerated version of a more familiar speaking voice. ]
Aah... of course, if there is someone asking for me...
[ They nod to the others, and then to you. ]
I will catch up... later. Please, show me the way.
[ they raise their hands, and turn in a circle once. ]
It is... uncomfortable, that they insist on eating together and conversing. All these people coming around, asking if I would like to partake as well...
Well, it's where those Terran scientists landed, when we didn't know that any life existed on your planet—we are a well-positioned trade city, west of Syrtus Major, under the umbrella of the Crown Colony. So we are familiar with your kind, though some things do not... change, easily.

Re: THE DINING ROOM
Hey, uh. Sorry to cut in. But someone out there's asking for you.
[He hooks a thumb toward the room he came from.]
Got a sec?

Re: THE DINING ROOM
[When they're safely free and not in hearing distance of anyone else:]
...sorry, dude. There wasn't a for-real message or nothing.
You just looked like you could use a breather. You doing okay?
Re: THE DINING ROOM
[ the person looks at you, a little strangely. ]
You show unusual consideration, but for that—
[ they raise their hands, and turn in a circle once. ]

[ they slap their palms against their thighs, once, to underscore that, looking agitated. ]
Re: THE DINING ROOM
Something you shouldn't do?
Re: THE DINING ROOM
Yes! Taboo, improper, inappropriate. A problem, to be rectified. You understand.
[ you have learned one (1) Martian word. ]
Re: THE DINING ROOM
...where you from, dude? Your accent's real close to someone I know.

If only it were so simple, young one.
[ and they snap into, curiously, a perfect British accent for the next line. ]
Some people do not want to learn, but when they hold the power, is it really a choice?
Re: THE DINING ROOM
Are they, like... in control or something?
Re: THE DINING ROOM
...I'm still not sure. It is difficult, to run two rivers parallel into one. Though I do not know if I would go so far as First-Keeper Naarabot.
Re: THE DINING ROOM
Are they, like... famous?
Re: THE DINING ROOM
[ they lower their voice a touch. ]
Well, she's the leader of the rebellion, there, too, so she's sort of a... topic of conversation, right now.
