Shrike's Heart (#2)
It's not quite a happy smile.
"I'm sorry," she says. "There's just nothing I can do, as things are. But the way is there; it just needs to be lit."
You open your mouth—maybe to say something, or to express confusion—but you have to cough, and taste something metallic, spattering black blood onto the ground in front of you. Then you realize—blood seeps from opening wounds in your arms, your chest, your stomach, your face. It rims your eyes and trails from your nose and you feel like you're dissolving—
—and you fall through the ground like it's the surface of a lake, and go down, down, down.

[ he coughs. ]
...well. Probably for the best you weren't here earlier. Actually.

Did yu live in the village up ahead?

[ he wheezes, again, squeezing the boy tight as he attempts to not cough into his hair and fails. ]
no subject
It gets into everything.

[ he moves as if he intends to wipe his mouth with his hand, but winces at moving his arm; there might be a breakage or sprain. ]
No chance even, for surrender.

[He hesitates.]
[Hesitates longer.]
[Pulls his hand into his sleeve so there's some fabric to spare, and uses it to wipe the man's mouth for him.]

Th-thanks. How can I protect him like this, right...
no subject
We'll look out for him.
no subject
...just wish I could do more.
[ he does submit to Sekhmet bandaging him up, though he still has a hacking wheezing cough. ]
no subject
You got him out, didn't you?
[He doesn't wince at that cough, though he knows damn well what's coming next]
no subject
Just, 'm so tired.
no subject
[He falls quiet for a minute.]
It's okay to rest. He's going to be fine.

[ he coughs again, after the pep girl gathers up the boy from his arms—this time, he has space free to rock forwards, dark blood spattering onto the marsh ground in front of him. ]
no subject
[Yeah.]
It's okay, if you sleep a little. We'll watch out for him, while you do.
no subject
Can you stay here with him...? We're -
Sekhmet is looking for medicine, and we're going to take his brother somewhere safe, but he shouldn't - falling asleep, or being alone right now, I think...
[ both of those could be bad. she's not a medical professional, but ]
no subject
His brother's dead already. The man... all that we can do is make him comfortable.
no subject
I know.
But - if there's a chance that we could still help him, then... I think that we should. That's why we're taking the smaller boy, too . . .

He has a minute left. Maybe two.

[ he coughs, again. it sounds painful.
those whispers come to you again, from the dark—
Give him the final mercy.
Here, though, it's just a suggestion. ]
—have to, have to try. Right? Everyone says I have to try.

[ but the coughing is getting worse. ]

His chances do not look good, but they go up if he stays conscious. That could buy us a little time. Shouldn't we try to maximize that?
