Shrike's Heart (#3)

The woman before you is beautiful—fair of features, with lovely golden skin and luxurious long black hair, petite. You have the immediate and distinct impression that she's just let go of your hand, and she steps back, and smiles.

It's not quite a happy smile.

"I'm sorry," she says. "There's just nothing I can do, as things are. But the way is there; it just needs to be lit."

You open your mouth—maybe to say something, or to express confusion—but you have to cough, and taste something metallic, spattering black blood onto the ground in front of you. Then you realize—blood seeps from opening wounds in your arms, your chest, your stomach, your face. It rims your eyes and trails from your nose and you feel like you're dissolving—

—and you fall through the ground like it's the surface of a lake, and go down, down, down.

[ she's not going to stop following her until she's able to catch up, so here's to hoping kohime will let help... ]

Hey... [ said softly as she reaches for her shoulder in an attempt to stop her from moving... but also she'd like to tug her backward and into herself. ] Koko, it's me.

[Stressed, she snaps at her when she answers.]

[ she doesn't remove her hand from her shoulder and instead just gazes at her. ]

...you don't have to do this alone. I'm right here. [ she looks to kohime's hand, where the ring is still ( hopefully ) in place on her finger. ]

[Yes, there's a ring. And also a blatant lie:]

I'm fine.

[ just this face. ]

[ she's going to take her hand and drag her toward the yeet!pit. ]

Do you really think I believe that, ... [ said so nobody else but them can hear it. ]

lashing her tail, before she says haltingly and quietly:]

I want them to be quiet. It's too much like that stupid house.

I'm not sure if this is going to help, but... here. [ she removes her signature headset and offers it to kohime. ]

Maybe this will help, but... if it doesn't.
Then I'll just have to whisper louder, and drown them out.

Don't listen to whoever the hell is talking in your ear.

[She takes it, and. . .

. . .Well, she has no idea how to use headphones.]

[ she takes it and sets it in place on her head; having to flatten her cat ears a bit to do it. the headset might be uncomfortable, so she'd understand if she removes it, but it could also help mitigate some of the whispers... maybe... ]

I do. [ she grabs for her hand. ] But fuck them.

[Well that's a relief, at least. For a moment she was afraid it was only her.]

Ugh, where are we?

I have no freaking clue. It kinda looks like a graveyard, if someone stopped giving a shit. [ she tugs her toward some circle, one that she assumes has water at the bottom, because... why not. ]

But disturbing the dead any longer than this isn't something I want to do, and if the whispers are bothering you, then we should get the hell out of here.
