Amaranth: A Dream

Once, there was a maiden...

...whose battles called her far from home.
She slew the thing she feared most, and conquered the land that feared her.
As she fought, far away, she knew her children needed guidance.
She knew they faced tyrants.
She knew they faced fear.
In her homeland, things were broken.
So, she held up her hand before the sun, and cast a shadow on the world, and drowned the troubles of her home in darkness.

"Survival's a long reach," she said.

I... I'm sorry; I wish I knew.
The others went to find... [ her voice catches ] ...to find my son.

As for the seed... [ a wince ] ...it is hard to look at. I don't know why they are here, if it is not to— I don't know. To remind me that I have failed, perhaps.

I'll join them, then. But... I am doing this to get you out. To free you. I know the weight of bloodshed and loss, and I won't let it chain you.

[ a smile—thin, pained, but grateful ]

I suppose you do.
—Or maybe you mean from someplace else, too.

[ Amaranth closes her eyes, then reaches out to take your hand for just long enough to give it a gentle squeeze. ]

Thank you.

[returning the squeeze, and smiling, small and strained but reassuring.]

I'll come back for you. I swear it.

[And heading for the shrine.]
