[the still water is apparently placid and mirrorlike. very still. the kind of still water that the saying "still waters run deep" is about.

as she touches the water, it's very cold and she can hear, vaguely and as if from a great distance, a chorus of familiar whispers, vague and eerie and formless, inchoate murmurs. nothing is intelligible and it's only barely audible, but she can hear Them.]
