Vergil's heart game r2

You feel weak, your body won't move no matter how you try, and you are falling, away from everything you know and love. Away from everything you need to accomplish. If you could just reach out, maybe you could hold on to it, claw your way back. But it's a useless endeavour, you fall unconscious, and your mind goes blank except for poetry and a familiar voice.

O mother Enitharmon, wilt thou bring forth other sons?
To cause my name to vanish, that my place may not be found,
For I am faint with travail,
Like the dark cloud disburden'd in the day of dismal thunder.

My roots are brandish'd in the heavens, my fruits in earth beneath
Surge, foam and labour into life, first born and first consum'd!
Consumed and consuming!
Then why shouldst thou, accursed mother, bring me into life?

You wake on the ground in a cave, cold, wet, and sticky. It smells of rotting flesh. Your objective is clear, but you can't recall a name or face. Nothing else about your memory of him is changed, but for some reason the name "Vergil" just won't come to you, and you couldn't describe how he looks if your life depended on it. But at least your body starts to respond to your will, slowly regaining enough strength to carry on.

The amulet has "Vergil" carved in the back, and while it isn't always visible, this is something he tends to wear daily, but of course you would recognise it anyway. Closed in Dante's hand is a second pendant. This is nearly identical to the other, but in silver, with Dante's name carved on the back.

It's true he shouldn't die so easily, if he did, then Vergil wouldn't have this problem still... But he is definitely dead. The wound is just the right size for Yamato, maybe that's something to do with it? If it can cut through anything, it can just...end someone's life even if they're practically indestructible? Look, logic doesn't matter, it's just the mirror dimension.

[He will pocket the amulets after wiping the blood off them and, well, what does he do about dead Dante? He's not sure so he'll sit him back in his chair and check around his desk for things more interesting than olive-covered pizza.

The blinking light device thing will probably eventually catch his eye but what the hell is an answering machine?

Maybe if he pokes random buttons something will happen.]

The olives are very important okay, what's better than telling your brother you'll buy him pizza, only to order the thing he hates on it and stab him?? Please understand his very important symbolism.

Somehow you manage to find the right button without erasing the message. There's a pause, the line doesn't seem to be good, plenty of crackling, but after a moment a message starts to play. A familiar voice to those who know Nero, "Hey, you two killed each other yet? I don't wanna have to come pick up any bodies so keep it together, dumbasses. Anyway we got Glory and Raven here right now so I was thinking you guys should come by too. Dad's gotta meet the grandkids sometime. Quit trying to avoid it, old man. Neither of you got an excuse for not visiting with Yamato."

[Really? Please. He looks at the Dante Body again and sighs, has no idea how to save the message so leaves it, and checks the desk drawers.]

The top middle drawer is crammed full of overdue bills. The drawers on the right side are just nudie mags. Or at least that's the kind of thing Vergil assumes is in Dante's desk, but he doesn't need that in his heart, so they're just highly suggestive of being porn on the cover and totally empty inside.

The other side is just garbage. Random notes and receipts, but especially from pawn shops. There are a few notes bearing a different signature from the others, which is not so neat as Dante's, but if you squint it probably says Vergil. All of these seem to be contracts and records for devil hunting.

There's a pillow and blanket folded up to one side together, like someone sleeps here. The shelf is full of books, and pretty well all of them are poetry, though the one currently sitting on top of the blanket with a bookmark in it is Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse by Anne Carson.

There's also a small photo album, pocket size, set on top of the shelf.

It's full, a little too full, some of the photos don't have a sleeve to go in so they're just loose in the centre. It's Nero and his family, both Kyrie and the kids as well as Shrike (no Jason, all my friends hate Jason), and then there's Glory and Raven, there's a few candid shots of the twins both fighting like petulant children and just casually sitting around in the motor home laying on each other. All combination of Spardas together, even Pistol makes a few appearances with everyone.

But that's just half the album, the other half is Five, Alexander and Cosmo, with guest appearances from other Baritones, Hargreeves, and Levity. Some look like they were taken in Amaurot, and that means the other Ascians he's seen are also in a few together with the grandpas.

Sometimes a man needs a terribly sentimental album to keep with him when he's going back and forth between worlds, you know?

[Oh no. This is cute. Should he leave this here with the dead Dante???

He's not sure. Eventually he puts it back, and instead goes and steals the photograph of Eva from Dante's desk. HE doesn't need it right now, if he's going to get upset he can stop being dead and do something about it. Pocketing that and checking the demon wall hanging. Interesting interior decoration.]

This is an Empusa, an incredibly low ranking demon that even a defenseless human could escape, if not fight. Although when they swarm together maybe that's another matter. And usually there's a queen not far away, which is far more frightening... You just know this because it's Vergil's heart and you're getting demon facts.

But this one is very much dead and just sort of on display. There's a few darts in it even. Really pulls the place together!

[Eh, hanging the trophies of your slain enemies either as corpses or things made from bits ripped off their corpses is an FFXIV thing too so whatever. Nice dartboard.

He will pull a piece of paper from one of the desk drawers, find something to write with, scribble Do Not Consume in big letters and pin it on Dead Dante before going to check out the weapons. Not that he needs any but they look interesting.]

Thanks man, it would really suck to have his dead brother eaten inside his heart.

Inside the case and piled in the corner, others sticking out through the demon, there's guns, daggers, gauntlets, a mace, some sort of extendable polearm, spears, a lot of swords... Most are highly ornamented with distinct motifs. Usually very obviously This Is A Demon, skulls and claws and - you know, stuff like the Sparda sword. A spine or an eyeball for some reason.

[Hmm... He'll pick out some swords, just... You know. To take them. And then on reflection return and add another note POISON!!! underscored three times and pin that to Dante too.

Some people are weird, he's just making sure.

And with stolen loot in hand he'll head back through the mirror.]

That's smart, now they definitely won't eat it! Good work.

Theft from a false world inside a mentalscape is the perfect crime, no court could convict you.
