[ You’re in a sleek room full of all kinds of sci-fi dials and knobs. You feel like you’ve been here a long time with these people around you, and that you have a lot longer to go before this is all over.

You can hear the distant sounds of the station creaking due to shockwaves from the fighting outside. What is going on in this galaxy? Well, it’s not very important to you. What’s important is surviving.

So.

Mutants and a crumbling society.

I don't suppose there's some secret way to smack these problems into each other and solve everything.

I think science might be able to help with both. Like, if we can use it to help society pick its feet up off the ground and strengthen itself, then maybe we can fight off the mutants.

Or, if we don't want to go that route, then maybe we can just make some sort of self sustaining underground bunker and wait until the shitshow passes us over.

Those sound pretty good, honestly.

[ smiles. ] Do you have a preference? I think the second might be the safer one, but I'm not opposed to trying to make the first one work. I just don't know if we're going to have the man power to do it.

I mean... either way?

I'm good with whatever.

I think I'm kind of... not ok with going to war. I think that has more of a chance to bite us in the ass. And with the other thing going on even if we do find a cure our people probably should rest. I think we should focus on a cure and maybe try to create a safety bunker.

Yeah. I...

[He hesitates for a long moment]

If other teams are involved, pretty sure war's only gonna make things worse. Not just for us, but for everyone.

Cure and a bunker sounds like the way to go.

Yeah. I don't even want to think about how this stupid war started... [ makes a face. ] But at least this way we can try to make it better.

Yeah... yeah.

Fingers crossed.

All we can do is try, right?

Exactly. [ slings an arm around him. ] We're all in this together, no matter what.

You think we'll pull it off?

I think we've got a chance, yeah. We're super scientists and it seems like the problems we're face are something we can solve. It's a good thing we changed jobs, y'know! [ offers him her good hand. ]

[Takes it and gives it a squeeze]

For real. We totally got this.

Well, we could try using the mutants as a focusing point to unite our society.

You know. If we don't all work together, the mutants will kill us.

[ nods. ] Not a bad idea. Rally everybody.

Do you think we should rally them to fight or rally them to help build the [ vague hand motions. ] other thing.

[Huff.]

Well. We are heroes, after all.

I suppose the heroic thing to do is try and save the galaxy.

Mm, so, like, finding a cure to the mutants? As much as I, personally, probably would have been all gung-ho about rushing into war I think we should do what's best for our planet. Even if we do find a cure our people deserve some downtime to pick themselves back up.

I think focusing our science on a cure and a place of safety might be best, so when this shit all passes us over we can rebuild, y'know?
