Heart Games: Sol [#0: TUTORIAL]

Welcome to the Great Library!

Let's say you stepped through a door to get here-- you’ll find that the door disappeared behind you, and there are no other doors in sight.

You are now in a big, round room, with numerous staircases and walkways along the walls which are lined with massive bookshelves.

There is a table in the center of the room, surrounded by eight chairs, and seven white books in front of them. There are also eight empty mugs, one in front of each chair. In the middle of the table there are plates stacked with... sandwiches, mostly? Different types of sandwiches that should taste good without heating.

. . . Which is for the best, really, because this place is Cold, even for Big Library standards.

Powers are off!

[The Swordcraft Academy Rules category details permissions and prohibitions that apply to Swordcraft Academy students, whoever those are, barring a noble’s judicial authority, whatever that is, and any considerations related to the Taboo Index: the so-called "higher law." Or so it says here in a footnote.

In general, there’s information about curfews, rest days, matters of hierarchy, but especially prohibitions. Some choice quotes:

  • "In order to maximize the elite disciple’s training, they shall receive a page to address his needs. The page shall be chosen from among the twelve highest-ranking primary trainees of that year, but if the disciple and managing instructor agree, a page can be released or transferred, and a new one may be chosen by them.”

  • “When an elite disciple hands down disciplinary punishment for breach of protocol, one of the following three types of commands is allowed. 1) Cleaning the school grounds (see area limits). 2) Training with a wooden sword (see regimen). 3) A duel with the disciple (see rules). In all cases, higher law takes priority.”]

[ Well, this is certainly giving him some weird pings... Especially the part about pages...

He has to give his head a hard shake before continuing. ]

Higher law?

[ Time to check out that Taboo Index ]

[The Taboo Index section is the longest in this book. It contains over a thousand entries of forbidden actions, starting with general things like murder and theft and going down to specifics like caps on the number of animals and fish that can be hunted in a year or which types of feed are forbidden to give to livestock.

Things that are generally prohibited: rebellion against the Church, the very greatest of crimes; challenging or questioning the Taboo Index; thinking of challenging the Taboo Index; shortening another person’s life or otherwise interfering with it in any way unless that person is not a criminal and/or said action did not happen during a duel; intentionally destroying shop merchandise; and so on and so forth.]

[ There's that weird obsession with the Church again, something Okami will never understand. ]

What an obscene amount of common sense rules.

[You're killing me.

ANYWAY, most of these are things you already know, painstakingly explained! Everything from how to gain points, to the particulars of many abilities, to a list of every item available in the points shop is mentioned here. The calligraphy is notably worse in this category, except for the section on Unit disparity. That one gets a little more breathing space between words, and doesn’t read like hurried notes. It’s almost like the person who wrote this assumed that only actual prohibitions would merit the reader’s attention.

Also possibly relevant: “Members of a unit are urged not smoke in any common areas, aside from those listed below,” followed by a list of locations that are open spaces exclusively, as well as “Members of a unit should refrain from engaging in physical activities that may inconvenience other members of their unit in any of the unit’s shared common areas, unless this has been previously discussed by all members of the unit and no one expresses their disagreement.”

I do not recognize some of these...

[FAIR TBH

The Rulid Village Standards are a list of very specific yet trivial things such as “Children must not cross the northern pass to play on their own without adult supervision,” work times, marriage eligibility and restrictions, job descriptions, salaries for Callings such as “Village Elder” and “Gigas Cedar carver,” maximum number of men-at-arms allowed in the village, and so on.

The Norlangath Basic Imperial Laws section is long and boring, just like everything else in this Newcomer’s Primer. Did you want to read on Judicial Law, the absolute power bestowed on high-ranking nobles which grants them the absolute obedience of any lower-ranking nobles and common people who live on their private estates, as long as whatever they want from them doesn’t contradict the Taboo Index? I hope you did, because now you have.

You’ll also find quotas for specific goods that can be imported and exported in a year. So many lists. So many goods. In such cramped handwriting.

The numbers are so low it may seem ridiculous, but you'd have to know to be able to tell!]
