Mori's heart

All at once a rainbow of bright lights feels as if it is bursting through you. It is an intense experience, but not an unpleasant one. As the colours burn through your skin, and lighting begins to spark through your veins, you feel stronger, you could take on the world right now.

Faintly in the distance, beyond the iridescent light show that overwhelms your vision, you can just about make out some silhouettes, but they’re too blurred, too indistinct and too far to tell anything about them. You can’t see them, but you know they’re welcoming you. You’re wanted here, you’re needed here, and the light is guiding you where you’re meant to go.

But... I want to help him anyway. Even as flawed and awful as I am. I don't know what's happened to him, but he's my friend, and I care about him. So whatever you'll take me for, I can do that.

Inko holds her tight, being in her arms makes you feel warm and safe and cared for.

I've only made it this far thanks to the people that have been with me. It's... [ not okay but ] I've come to accept that I still have a lot of growing to do... and I'm working on it. I'll do my best anyhow.

... There are a few things I can take credit for.

[ Like braving the cliff for the senjusou--she would have drowned if not for Shuten, yes, but... she was the one who picked them and got herself there. He insisted on it himself. ]

... I was challenged by the pirate captain Gi-gan to pick an herb that grew in a cave on the side of an oceanside cliff that was almost entirely sheer, save for a small edge that could serve as a pass. Everyone else was far too large to walk it--they would have fallen into the ocean. I picked them, but the tide came before I could get back on my own. ... She accepted it anyway, and I was allowed to go undercover into the trafficer's ring to help rescue the women Lord Kum-ji was kidnapping and selling to a neighboring country.

"Oh my! That sounds so dangerous, it must have been terrifying. But you forged ahead anyway?"

I had to. If I didn't--I wouldn't have been able to help those people, and I wouldn't be able to look Captain Gi-gan or the others in the face again.

...

I'm a lot of bad things... but I'd like to think that a coward isn't one of them. Moreover, the fact that that situation existed in the first place... was likely my father's fault. So I needed to end it, for our people.

"Oh no, I don't think anyone could accuse you of that."

Inko takes Hiryuu's face in her hands and smiles at her.

"Why did you do it? Such a dangerous, scary thing? Why did you want to help those people, Hiryuu?"

If I didn't pick the herb, then Captain Gi-gan wouldn't let me help. I would have been made to sit at the sidelines.... But it was my responsibility to protect them. I may not be their princess anymore, but they're still my people. And--

... I love them. My people, and the kingdom my father loved. I don't want to see them be hurt or suffer if I can change it. I just wanted to do my part--to make things better for them.

"You want to help the people you love. You want to protect the people in need. You don't want to leave anyone in pain when you can do something for them.

Now Hiryuu. However rough around the edges you may be, however selfish you may feel, however far you need to go to think of yourself as good... Does that sound like the will of an awful person?"

... But you can't say someone is good, either, if they cause the people around them to suffer.

[ So she's just Bad. ]

"The world is not so simple that it can have people that are only good or only bad.

Tell me, who are you causing to suffer? Specifically?"

My unit--Mori included. ... Cobalt and Thorn. Eclipse, especially.

[ she's afraid there might be others but those are the ones she knows of. ]

"Okay. Let's take that one at a time, how have you harmed your unit? What do you think you've done, that is solely your fault?"

[ I mean. might as well talk about the big one. ]

King and I got them all possessed. And we killed a lot of people because of it.

"Yes... That's a bad one. And I know Eclipse is still struggling to deal with it all.

That's a perfect example, isn't it? Where you were trying to help, and doing everything you could to save everyone in danger, but got caught up in something awful.

But that wasn't just you. Do you believe King is awful, and only hurting your teammates too?"

I'm sure there are people who think that King is bad. Some of his memories.. have been terrifying, and they haven't necessarily always painted him in the most generous light. But they'd be wrong. They just don't know him like I do.

[ she might also be intensely biased but that's beside the point. ]

"That's right. King might have done some bad things, and he may have hurt some people while trying to do what he thought was right. But he's someone important to you that you love no matter what.

Now, who does that sound like?"
