Castle Game: pep!pep!

[Suddenly, you hear the wailing of a horn. Outside, tension is turning to panic. You can't see anything, but you can hear people gathering up their things, sobbing in fear or speaking in harsh whispers. A lone voice calls from the distance:

The enemy approaches!

Upon the map, an unfamiliar geography appears -- several small nations, clustered together. Outside of them, an endless sea of enemy forces, identified only by a symbol of a cracked skull. Each of the small nations is marked with a flag in one unit's colour, and a tiny model of a castle.

You are at war. How will you protect your people and yourself?

[ Looking away from Cobalt and trying to think... ]

... Units who play hard are going to target teams most likely to be gifted. That's us, maybe, the punks or the heroes. That means they get whatever is shared.

Doesn't that just mean we should share more to compensate?

... I don't trust the idea of willingly killing ourselves. Which is what we're doing if we give everything away this time.

But hoarding is just as selfish at this point...

[takes a deep breath]

I don't want to live if there's a chance we can use our resources to help someone else.

Bad End is right there. I'm so tired of watching them die. They always die.

I don't care about living. I don't care about going to Lilith. I don't care what they do to me. I am tired of playing these stupid games.

You might not care if you're tortured by Lilith but I care! I was fine, I was fine with protecting others and losing. Even if it meant watching you guys die. That was your choice and I honor that. But this is different! This is letting that bitch have her way with you!

I don't want Bad End to die again. I don't! But I don't even think we'll be able to save them, Cobalt! Fuck, I don't know what to do!

Even if I do go to Lilith, at least I can do it on my own terms.

That's not nothing, to me. It's one tiny bit of agency in this place where I rarely feel like I have any when it counts.

And if I can help someone else while I do it, even a little, it's worth it.

We don't know we're even doing anything for them... You could be cursing yourselves and they could still die...

Or we could try to save ourselves and they could die.

But this way, we know we did what we could. No regrets.

[ Gripping his hair with both hands ]

... there's no point to trying to save ourselves right now.

I just want. I don't want her to hurt you like that... Fuck.

.,. it's one thing to protect others, it's another to willingly kill yourselves. They're going to steal. They want that 10.

To keep some of the other higher units from winning they might very well all start stealing from each other. It's going to be a photo finish...

They go after the wounded gazelles. What was Sunset's theory? End the pain faster. It makes strategic sense for them.

I don't think they're going to let us help Bad End or Heart Soldier at this point. They're going to take it all.
