[ He startles, absorbed enough that he didn't notice her until he did that. But then he rests his hand over hers, to acknowledge her and so she doesn't feel the need to remove it. ]

You try and take so much blame and responsibility upon yourself. But all of us here-- by this point, do you think any of us are without blood on our hands? It's okay to be selfish, you know? To desire to protect someone you love-- you have every right to do so.

I do not! I know what cost it would bring— and furthermore, say I gave voice to it? I could tell you once again of my fondness of Requiem, of the brothers on sensitiv, of Tsukinaga on avante and my dear friend from home on Alcheme! And then what? If it must be weighed, do you think it does me a favor to hear that you have judged my relationships to carry less importance than those the rest of you may carry?

I will not put that judgement upon you! I will carry it out myself, if I must! If I have judged myself wanting, then it is a blow struck by my own hand, and not a blade thrust in by those I would show my back as I stand at the front ready for blows from without!

[ It's an argument they've had over and over again, and with her grabbing on to him she can see pain unsheilded on his face even as the vehemence in his voice covers any sound that might come out raw— he does not wish to show her his weakness, his cracks. Each time he does, he can only strive to make certain it will be the last. ]
