Those who you wanted to protect hated you because despite your strength, you couldn't save all of them. But that's unfair, isn't it? Because nobody can save everyone, as much as they'd like to try. So why, why why why why would they lay those lives at your feet? You tried! You failed, but anyone would've. So yes, of course you were angry. Anyone would've been.
And because of that anger, the charred, still smouldering bodies of those you called your friends now lie around you. The scent of burning hair and skin and flesh rises up into the air, the billowing smoke signaling your crime to all who can see.
You were angry. You could have stopped, and honestly, you should have. You couldn't hear their voices as they cried out to you, first in sorrow, then in horror, and finally in pain.
You accept your punishment, then. As a fallen hero like you should. It's the least you can do for those you failed to save. It's the least you can do for those who you murdered.
It's the least you can do to prove you aren't exactly the same as your father.
That thought is all that gives you solace as the bucket of boiling hot water pours over your head, searing and scarring your whole body, your nerve endings set aflame. It's all that helps you cope with the pain of the jagged icicle that comes crashing through your gut, impaling you. It's unfortunately not quite enough to help you overcome the fear that shoots through you when you feel those hands around your throat, and yet even as your windpipe is crushed you still don't die - and then the hands let go, trembling. The execution is neither clean nor swift, and your father's shadow can never be truly cleansed from your horrid little soul, but at least maybe you can find the slightest bit of peace in the cute little kitten that rests against your chest, purring as it blissfully ignores your struggles and broken gasps for air.
