He knew someone close to him would have medical problems, so he studied and they eventually became useful when there was an emergency. Then, someone made a mess of everyone in a trial 'game', so the need became very obvious. Doesn't help that every doctor you've had has had some level of psychopathy, but that kind of goes with the territory.

It's power over life and death. Takes a certain kind of person to get attracted to that field with all its demands.
