What are those places like? I haave been to Terra—Earth, but not everywhere, and not for very long.

Tokyo's like. Real big flashy glass buildings, and real bright flashy lights. San Fran's a little slower. There's these docks that're famous, and real steep hills.

Ah... buildings of glass? Would they not be too fragile, though?

And Japan gets earthquakes and stuff, and it's fine.

Hmm... do you suppose there is some special technique in the making of it? Of course we have glass, but it is not so strong to make whole buildings out of, and the mechanisms we make from it are still quite fragile... there would be so many possibilities, with a stronger material that looked the same—

The mechanisms here are ancient... they need to be recalibrated, especially since this level of the temple hasn't seen use in many ages. Measuring things it hasn't had reason to measure in some time... especially now that the waters rise.

We have done things this way for ages for so long, and it is the way things are done, she says! If it ceases to function, then the waters flow where they flow, she says!

Qaiyaan will just fuss more, to see a Terran touch the mechanisms, and besides—I know how it all should work. It's just getting her to give me enough peace to actually fix them, without getting distracted by another argument about darool.

If you can! She is very single-minded. I would ask you to convince her, but she would never be swayed by a Terran, for better or for worse.
