Everyone's always trying to influence the paper, and everyone's always upset about however they end up depicted—it's really too much.
But—well, I'm usually a guest of the Countess, but I suppose I'm pulling double-duty. She's had assassination attempts before, after all, and one of them got awfully close. She's too important—her and her work, that is—for her to be endangered.
I imagine that would have to be hard. I can't even imagine... and in the end, there's no pleasing everyone I suppose.
[ Poor guy. ]
I had no idea someone had tried to remove her before. That's awful. I hope that the rest of the evening proves uneventful and you don't have to do anything beyond enjoy the night sky.
[ Please don't... let shit hit the fan. ]
Seems like you think really highly of the Countess though.
She's a great woman as well—kind, to keep inviting me. Maybe too kind for her own good, considering all the people she lets hang around here, but I'd like to think that's still a good trait.
...I had a friend who believed in kindness and understanding, once, who I thought the world of, so maybe it's not bad that there's someone else a bit like him, after all.
In a world where there are all kinds of hardships... it's nice finding those precious few who shine, huh? I'm glad you had someone like that... and that in the countess, you've found another.
[ A soft smile. Though it turns into a small frown after a moment. ]
Are there people you're wary of at the party tonight though? It sounds like you don't really trust everyone in attendance.
Well, I'm still not sure why Naarabot's the guest of honor, of all people. Even if she hasn't been formally charged, she's definitely a traitor to the Crown, and suspicious, besides. If she's willing to ally with the Groundcleansers, those terrorists...
Maybe better you don't hear about what sorts of people the Groundcleansers are, Miss, but—well, they're Martians who want to keep Mars for Martians only, which I can sort of understand, given how long my own people have lived without a homeland. But we wouldn't stoop to fighting for it like this.
...listen, I haven't known you for very long, but—I don't know if I could get your help with something. Even though Raachna's vouched for her, I've still been asked to investigate Naarabot for espionage charges.
[ This is quite a bit and there is just so much talk regarding Naarabot, she barely knows where to begin. Who are his own people? And the Martians want to keep their land for themselves... but she thought the Belgians were mistreating them? Or maybe she's understanding all of this wrong. . .
The Crown of England, Miss—you must have traveled from abroad?
If you've never been to Mars before, perhaps after the Salon you might travel there, though you'll want a trustworthy guide. Certain parts can be quite dangerous. But a number of powers have colonies there—France, England... and Belgium.
[ he scoffs at belgium.
no one likes belgium because king leopold is the fucking worst, ]
You nailed it in one. I've been pretty sheltered due to my own family situation and I'm from the far east, so I've been a bit lost when it comes to the politics of it all.
[ Not sure if she should mention Japan or not... ]
I think I'd like to check out Mars for myself though, as you say.
Well, when the Duchess of Argyll lands, you'll get the chance, Miss—if you make friends here, perhaps someone might ask you along on an expedition, but even just visiting the cities, it's still a sight to behold.
Just be a little cautious with your manners—Martians can be pretty stuck in their ways, and expect that from visitors, too.
I certainly won't turn down an exciting expedition or guide if I manage to get one. The Countess did tell me to be careful regarding manners, too. I'll be extra cautious.
Just, well—be careful. A young woman traveling alone still faces quite a bit of danger.
[ he will also offer you influence if you agree to investigate First-Keeper Naarabot's potential espionage activities; 2x "all's fair in love and war." ]

And... about what you said earlier. If Naarabot isn't guilty... then investigating shouldn't harm anyone. At the very least, I can keep my eyes open.
[ She's already trying to understand things anyway, so sure. ]

I'll see you later, then.
[ Also. She will go back to the ballroom. And then head for the lower deck ]
