"Oh—I'm a politician, you could say, so I'm doing some work on a research paper regarding community-building," she says, twirling her pen between her fingers. "I've often exchanged ideas with Grace."

What are her ideas usually like?

"Well... she's gotten a little more reticent about them, which is unfortunate. She once worked on some very important research into something that could alter the shape of the vampiric soul toward something more flexible—less prone to stasis."

Something more resembling a human's?

"You could say that. I don't think it's past anyone's capacity to change, though, even if they're Kindred. Everyone can, if they're given the right... reasons and incentives"

But without motivation, there's no reason to change.

What reasons and incentives are you in favor of yourself?

"Ideally, I'd like everyone to work together because they believe in it, of course. If that doesn't work—well, there's still opportunities for rehabilitation."

Rehabilitation through what means?

"Well, sometimes when one won't allow themselves to be taught, they must be made to learn. I think I've got a very good methodology for it. Minimally invasive. We all have to compromise to get along, after all."

That doesn't really answer the question, though.

"What do you guess, then, young scholar? If it's so important to you."

History tells me something like torture!

"Well, Kindred can withstand a lot more than mortals. Sometimes you can't make an omelette the size of society without breaking a few eggs. We all make compromises."

There's always the people who refuse to work within the bounds accepted by society, I suppose... Assuming it's a voluntary choice, that is.

"If you think about it, isn't it better than killing those who refuse to play along? Really, it's a mercy. Some Princes aren't so kind."

I think that probably depends on who you ask?

"I'm guessing you don't agree."

Sometimes death is kinder, that's all.

"I'd say it's a waste, personally. But you're a mortal, aren't you? Or as Grace would say, a human."

Well, nowadays, anyway.

"Then why does it concern you?"

Because I was still sentenced to death over it.

"Then, wouldn't you understand that those who aren't mortals should govern each other, rather than being beholden to mortal ideas?"
