We say dragon rider, everyone knows who we are. If the partnership isn't equal, we don't let you be a rider.
We're the first dragon riders. We take our reputation and our work seriously.
Well, ground rule number ones that your dragon partner is your equal. Not your slave. Not some blessing from on high. There may be thousands of dragons like yours, but that doesn't matter. Once you have a partner, they are yours, and that is everything.

[Then hardened again when she looks at Kitsu.] If you're still questioning what being a dragon rider means by the end of your first week, then....well, honestly, by that point, your dragon will have probably dumped you into the ocean. They can pick up that sort of thing.
Disarm. Any weapons. Meet a dragon who hasn't been with humans a while with a weapon, and you're gonna lose something.
