But I don't think it's deriding them either to acknowledge that on the flip side, it makes the times where we have to pick and negotiate our interests hard. That's just the damned reality of the situation. Doesn't mean they're worth any less.

He's saying that to help him cope. He's not personally attacking you, he's distressed. He's trying to put distance between himself and the situation so he can work through this. I understand what you're saying, I owe everything to my friends too, and I'd never agree to him saying we shouldn't have them, but this is the first time he's facing friendship being actively used as an attack against him and he's trying to deal with it. He's making bad jokes and relying on black humour to process what we have to do here.

Not everyone copes the same way, Hiryuu-san. This isn't the time to have a conversation about the importance of friendship, it's only going to distress him further if he accepts that.
