[turning to face her, grip on his collar tightening]
I'm pointing out the obvious. Games like this would be easier if you didn't care about anyone. No mental anguish, no worries that the people you care about most might die because you chose to protect someone else you thought might be more at risk. . .
That's not me speaking ill of your attachments. That's me stating a fact.
[shakes his head]
. . . and arguing about it is pointless, anyway. All of us have people we want to protect, even-- [hesitates, choking on his words a bit]
She's eyeing him carefully and giving him time to say his piece and when it's her turn to talk again, ]
Then stop saying things to hurt and provoke others. If you think it would really be better or easier to live without connections to others, even given these circumstances, then you still have a lot to learn, especially about us.
[HE DOES NEED IT, SOMETIMES. but it's hard for him not to go back to his old philosophy-- the one he tried (and failed) so hard to abide by when he got here-- when, for the very first time, the connections of himself and his unit are being used against them. when he really doesn't want to be having these tumultuous feelings of regret and fear for the people he cares about]
[he's the one who doesn't appreciate the full gravity of death, after all. so. . . why should he care?]
. . . yeah. LiliS.
Hurricane's is avante, and King's is pep!pepe!. Who is yours?
[ I'm assuming she missed his conversation with Hurricane while she was arguing with--someone. She already knows better than to ask for Taisho or for SensitIV. Which makes the choise... well. Almost easy. ]
My vote is for Avante as well, and Pep!Pep! after that.
I would have fallen apart a dozen times and not been able to put myself back together long before you two even got here if not for the people off this team. So don't talk to me about how it would be better not to have them! I know perfectly well what a hell it is to think you have no one!
And I'm not saying having attachments is a bad thing! It's impossible to not care, just look at fucking Mars!
But I don't think it's deriding them either to acknowledge that on the flip side, it makes the times where we have to pick and negotiate our interests hard. That's just the damned reality of the situation. Doesn't mean they're worth any less.
Mars is advocating that we should simply live without them because it would be better that way. You and I both know that this place makes the impossible happen every day. And if he's not careful, some day they might just tinker with his heart and head enough to make his wish come true.
He's saying it knowing damn well he failed to follow his own advice. I don't think he'd even want us to follow it seriously despite how he acts about it.
This is the first time he and I are in a game where we're told "hey, go pick a unit, their literal lives depend on your choice" and now we have to sort that out. Are you even trying to understand where he's coming from?
Of course I understand! Do you know how many times they've made us hurt people we care about? This isn't the first of the last time they've asked us to decide who lives and who dies, and it sucks but we've always understood that our relationships were an important key to making it through this place.
[ trrryyying to reign her temper in. kind of failing. but trying. WHICH IS A PRETTY DECENT OPPORTUNITY FOR WHOEVER WANTS TO HOP IN AND BREAK UP THIS FIGHT before someone can say something she'll regret later :'D ]
[listen, HSS is full of optimistic and well-meaning and good people, and Mars admires that so much. but when, for the very first time, his connections with people are being weaponized against him and his unit, he is definitely panicking]
[HE APPRECIATES SOMEONE UNDERSTANDING HIS VIEWPOINT. . . rather than just telling him he's Wrong]
That is exactly what he's doing. He just said "not making friends was the way to go." He believes that our lives would be easier without friends. I would have laid down and died in that castle if not for the few friends I had left in the entire world!
[ so SHE IS NOT GOING TO SIT DOWN AND LISTEN TO THIS SHIT QUIETLY ]
He's saying that to help him cope. He's not personally attacking you, he's distressed. He's trying to put distance between himself and the situation so he can work through this. I understand what you're saying, I owe everything to my friends too, and I'd never agree to him saying we shouldn't have them, but this is the first time he's facing friendship being actively used as an attack against him and he's trying to deal with it. He's making bad jokes and relying on black humour to process what we have to do here.
Not everyone copes the same way, Hiryuu-san. This isn't the time to have a conversation about the importance of friendship, it's only going to distress him further if he accepts that.
[ well. that. actually does in fact help quite a bit as far as shutting her up and getting her to realize that she actually hasn't been understanding things from Mars's perspective.
in part because he doesn't explain himself well, and in part because she lives too much in her own heart and traumas. TOO BAD the explanation came too late for her argument with Eclipse.
SHE'S GONNA JUST. TAKE A MOMENT. to breathe. and reign herself in. ]
I see what you're saying. And--I'm sorry. I'll tell him too.
[Mori watches her visibly reign herself in and feels very proud of her in that moment, nodding. She might have gone too hard on Eclipse, and that's another discussion to have, but seeing her stop and consider things and rethink is a tough thing to do, especially in the moment, and he gives her credit for it, smiling softly.]
I think he'll appreciate that. Mars-kun is a lot softer inside than he lets on, don't believe he means everything he says. I'm sure, if we're gentle with him, he'll come to accept these things a lot more easily in time.

Making your unitmates feel bad for needing friends and having attachments is Not Helpful. ]
Those same attachments you're deriding have saved us multiple times in the past. Don't speak ill of them.
