[ You all wake up in bed with your smartphone at your bedside, all of you in your sleepwear, with a message on your phone.

Good morning, newly departed guest stars! You've got new co-stars to meet, a new dorm to explore, and the television in the main room with the "names" of everyone in your unit with flashing empty boxes next to them, waiting for you to each assign yourself a personal color as well as a mythological creature (if that is available to you—some of you will have that option grayed out). Or assign them to each other, really, no one's stopping you.

Once you've chosen your color and creature (or, once it's chosen for you), your closets will unlock with 3 sets of traditional Japanese clothing fitted exactly to your size. Additionally, upon choosing your creature, you might find yourself suddenly with some new appendages (check Player Notes).

Also, the front door is currently locked. It looks like you actually have no choice but to get to know each other for an hour or two before those open up. ]

Dead people, usually! Though I guess there can be all kinds of gods or whatever, too...

They were scary, but... If they're stuck as spirits or ghosts, doesn't that mean something's trapping them?

Not necessarily! Maybe they don't want to move on just yet--maybe they've still got business in our world, or they wanna look after us. But if there's something we can do to help them finish their business, that definitely won't hurt.

[A pause]

Do you know a lot of spirits?

[hasavision]

[Hoo boy how to explain this one.]

...I saw parts of a bunch of them before? But they were definitely trapped.

They're free now, though.

...When we get outta here with our wishes, you think you're gonna use 'em on that?

What's "home" like for you?

I'm from Tokyo, Japan. Do you have that where you're from?

[She pauses, as if it takes her a little to place it, then grins]

Yep! I'm from California in the States, but my family's from Japan, I think. I don't think I've ever been to Tokyo though...usually too much stuff to do back home, I think. What's it like?

Ohh, that's still cool. I lived in a really tiny village, so there wasn't that much going on other than training and TV shows. Though they've got TV even in the suburbs, right?

Yeah. Mom always watched her soap operas while ironing.

[Her expression goes a little soft, or sad, or both, but her smile doesn't fade]

Definitely! Like...how to do laundry, and how to make dinner, and how to fix the kerosene heater in the winter before it smells too bad. So even if you aren't good at studying, you can be good at that other stuff! It's okay!

I think my [...] -parents would probably be mad at me if I wasn't good at studying.

Same--I get it.

But there's so much more to life! Some of us will get to training on our own time--our needs are still valid!
