[Suddenly, you hear the wailing of a horn. Outside, tension is turning to panic. You can't see anything, but you can hear people gathering up their things, sobbing in fear or speaking in harsh whispers. A lone voice calls from the distance:

The enemy approaches!

Upon the map, an unfamiliar geography appears -- several small nations, clustered together. Outside of them, an endless sea of enemy forces, identified only by a symbol of a cracked skull. Each of the small nations is marked with a flag in one unit's colour, and a tiny model of a castle.

You are at war. How will you protect your people and yourself?]

I don't think any of us have been in a situation quite like this before.
Games designed to kill have never put lives outside those of the idols here at risk. At least that I know of.

[ a pause; then, as if making a conscious choice to soften her current military demeanor ]

...How are you feeling?

The next question, though, is just as important: Who do you want to protect?

[ She would not normally be this assertive, but Asphodel isn't a child or even a youth. He can handle her asking more of him. ]

I'm kind of a douchebag, but you've all accepted me so I want to protect the ones who have cared for me since I've arrived in Imeeji.

...I gather that "douchebag" is meant as some sort of insult where you come from? [ a lip quirk ]

You're rising to the challenges here, and that is enough for me, regardless. Most of the others on our unit—John and myself obviously excepted—are very young. I anticipate that they will look to you, and you must be prepared to support them.

I don't like the idea of any of the kids having to deal with the consequences of this game. So I'll do what has to be done, you've got my word on that.

We have been placed in a war.
But as we wait for the results, think as well if there are others you wish to protect.

No life here is empty of meaning, but whose eyes can you meet after you have slain them?
[ this question, at least, is not one she expects him to answer—certainly not immediately ]

Really? You'll have to introduce him to us sometime soon.

I already promised Lavender I'd have him over for dinner.

[ He says that lightly, trying to lift the mood up ]

Really? I'd like to meet them someday.

They're... a bit of a controversial figure, it turns out.
But I think Cardigan is one of the most honorable, devoted people I have ever met.

[ a beat; then, slightly wry ] As far as an amnesiac can comment, at least.
