Pokemon: Downtown

This is where people come to play it seems. The Battle Arena, where you can challenge your friends, rivals, or anyone really, sits side-by-side the town's Pokemon Center where you can get your Pokemon healed for free after a rousing battle. You and your Pokemon partner (even your entire unit!) can star in short plays to be aired at the movie theater or even beauty pageants showcasing their new hair-cuts and clothes. There's a karaoke bar, a small theme park, an arcade.

Mmhmm. It's called a Litwick. His name is Jack.

[she doesn't seem to be bothered by the melting wax of the litwick's body. the litwick... quivers in the face of the dratini, the candle flame starting to flicker out]

Hey, don't be scared. I'm right here with you.

[... jack's flame soothes out. gotta be brave!!11!!]

[Dratini bops noses! Some...what gently. Or tries to! Where Litwick would have a nose anyway.

Drati! Drati!]

Sure Jack is up for the challenge?

I don't pull punches.

[jack makes a little noise, and then boops back. now they are friends]

Hmmm... let me take a look at you.

[she approaches intensity with jack in tow, peering up at him]

As for Intensity---

Well, being a host and participant in many a tournament means he has the cocky grin and posture down to a art form.

Clearly at least a lvl 5 rival]

Then by all means.

[lav looks at intensity. then looks at jack. jack seems less frightened now]

Okay. We'll give it a try.

[bluescreenwhitedragon]

Excellent.

[Dratini trills happily, lapping two quick circles around Lav and Jack before slithering its way back up to the arena. If a snake could bounce, it'd be bouncing with excitement on Intensity's side of the battle arena]

Take your position.

[lav sets jack down on the ground and crouches next to it]

Just do your best, okay? I'm right behind you.

[and she steps back]

Let's start.

[bluescreenwhitedragon]

[With the authority of someone who does this as a day job:]

Game start!

[And Dratini slides to the very center of the ring - slightly on Intensity's side of the field, coiled down and ready to play... I mean, fight.

(Though what to do when you're signature move is wrap and your opponent is literally on fire. Hmmm)]

[looking at her phone's pokedex app]

... okay, who goes first? Should we do rock-paper-scissors?

[bluescreenwhitedragon]

I have no problem with letting the challenger go first. Do you?

[Dratini lifts her head up. Drati!

Oh, are there rules? Oh, is this turn based?

Yes yes, let the new friend go first. Maybe it will make him relax!]

[maleficafe]

Okay. Then... Jack, use Ember.

[Ember deals fire damage and has a 10% chance of burning the target. jack's flame burns brighter and gives off some sparks]

[Dratini is resistant to fire, so it seems pleased by the sudden warmth. Even if oh, that's a little too warm. It's fine. It's fine.

This is play, right? They're playing!

Intensity, on the other hand, dramatically points, the other hand clenched in a fist:]

Dratini! Thunder Wave!

[To which she blinks, turns back to her trainer as if she is considering whether or not she wants to obey. But oh. Jack was doing a light show. So she can too!

And a burst of concentric circles that attempts to paralyze the target]

[jack looks dazed by the shock wave, and seems to be moving a little stiffly afterwards. looks like the paralysis hit its mark]

Oh dear... hmmm... Jack, use Astonish if you can.

[but jack's still reeling from being paralyzed, so he can't move!]

[bluescreenwhitedragon]

[Even without her trainer's command, Dratini takes this opportunity to coil herself once, twice, three times around Jack. Eventually stopping when she is nose to... nose with him.

(And never mind that this puts her in very closer proximity to his flame.)

Drati! Drati!

Dratini uses Wrap.]

[aaaand that's game. Jack unfortunately can't do much like that, and the damage will only compound, so with a sad little cry he passes out.

but with Dratini wrapped around him it's easy to inflict burn as a last-ditch effort, so now they're both status-inflicted]

Oh...

[bluescreenwhitedragon]

[Oh. Is right.

Dratini topples over - Jack still in her grasp as the burn hits! And then she flails uselessly like a Magickarp.

Drati! Drati!

To which Intensity just sighs and tries to de-tangle the two Pokemon]

[crouches down to do the same, picking up the fainted (oozed) jack in her hands]

We should get them healed up.

[bluescreenwhitedragon]

[How convenient that the Poke-center is just right over there.

Drati just sadly flops to the side, whining~ Drati! Draaaaaaaatiiiiiiiii!

Intensity holds her arm out so that Dratini can coil up his arm]

[to the pokemon center they go. once jack has been healed up, he makes some soft noises at lav and curls up on her shoulder]

Hey, you did good. I'm really proud of you.

[then, addresses intensity]

Thanks for the battle.

[Dratini trills happily, still on Intensity's arm and inclines her head at Jack. That was fun!]

Are you always so gracious after a loss?

[This does not compute]

Depends. If it wasn't a fair battle, I would have been mad. But you fought well. You, too.

[addressing dratini, and holding her hand out to see if it will let her give it some scritches]

And I think it's good for me and Jack to step outside our comfort zones, sometimes.

[Maybe not scritches so much as Dratini takes the invitation to coil halfway up Lavender's arm, trilling happily as she tries to bop noses]

[oh hi. lav giggles a little]

Dratini, you're very friendly, aren't you?

I'm sure someone in the production staff finds this all very amusing.
