Pokemon: Downtown

This is where people come to play it seems. The Battle Arena, where you can challenge your friends, rivals, or anyone really, sits side-by-side the town's Pokemon Center where you can get your Pokemon healed for free after a rousing battle. You and your Pokemon partner (even your entire unit!) can star in short plays to be aired at the movie theater or even beauty pageants showcasing their new hair-cuts and clothes. There's a karaoke bar, a small theme park, an arcade.

[The crowd hardly seems to notice, but during the big long guitar solo, Griffin takes a step back from the limelight and talks away from the microphone to her.]

What's wrong? Not havin' fun?

It's nothing like that, but--I think this song might be better suited for someone like you than me.

[Aw shit. Damn, he hadn't predicted that a heart-thumping rock song would fail to pump anyone up. Improvising, he hands his microphone to her Charmander and gently nudges the Pokemon to the front of the stage, right before the lyrics kick back in.]

Your turn!

[And, hell, it's so fucking cute that the audience is still havin' a good time. Giving Griffin time to turn back to Hiryuu and give her an encouraging touch of the shoulder. He really just wants her to be able to have a good time, too! But he's got a dad-esque patience when he suggests,]

Okay, how 'bout... something a bit more low key. We can do it duet-style - if I sing the first verse, you'll be able to pick up the second.

[ Charmander is having the TIME OF HIS LIFE! he might not be able to sing anything other than his name to human ears, but it's clear from the way the other Pokemon are reacting that whatever he's saying in their language definitely matches the heart and soul of the lyrics.

Hiryuu feels a little bad? She didn't mean to cause him trouble. But--she does like the idea of being able to work with him on something that... is just a tiny bit less rough? And something she can model after him. And she plain appreciates that he apparently cares enough to switch it up for her. She nods her head in agreement. ]

I'd like that.

[ time to wonderwall ]

[gigadevilbreaker]

[He flashes her another good boy smile and pats her back.]

Attagirl. [Then quickly turns to the machine to queue up another song. The explosive, closing riff of Guns 'n' Roses draw huge applause, with Riolu howling to high heaven with a huge smile on his face.

Griffin gestures for a mic back, and his pup hands it over.]

Okay okay, one more, guys.

[But this time, the slow twangs of a guitar in minor key play out - melancholy but hopeful. A hush washes over the bar.

Griffin shoots Hiryuu a quick signal with his hands - when he points to himself, he'll take the lead, and he'll point back to her when it's her turn. Casually, he struts back into the spotlight, but his eyes are on her the whole time. Singing to her, like an outstretched hand inviting her to this part of his heart.]

I know, nobody knows, where it comes and where it goes.

I know it's everybody sin - you've got to lose to know how to win.

[ The slower, more subdued song is not one that Hiryuu is anymore familiar with than the last, however--the fact that it is slower means she's less worried about falling behind the lyrics. The melody, too, seems to be a bit more predictable--and with a confidence that she lacked last time, Hiryuu jumps in, voice clear over the microphone and--to her delight--not nearly as off-key as she was afraid she'd be: ]

Half my life ss books, written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages

[ Meanwhile, Charmander starts making a keening-humming noise in time and roughly the right notes for the song, which creates an extra wistful effect. ]

[Griffin's eyes light up when he hears Hiryuu sing in earnest - she has a good voice now that it actually carried some confidence! The delight is clear in his face, and Riolu's. So when the chorus kicks in - he points quickly to himself to signal her - there was a bounce in his step, energy and excitement bleeding from him.]

Sing with me, sing for the years - sing for the laughter, sing for the tears.

Sing with me, just for today; maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you awa-a-a-ayyyy...!

[Another guitar solo starts up and he shoots Hiryuu another glance. Thumbs up? Doing better?]

[ She gives him a thumbs up back; this--is much easier for her adapt and get into. Having heard his own verse, seeing the same words light the screen again, she repeats: ]

Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear

Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

[ As they hit the chorus and the new, simpler lines appear on the screen--an exact or near repetition one after the other--her voice grows louder and more confident, especially as the meaning of the words sinks in and resonates with her. She's not dancing or traveling the stage like he is--but the difference is still quite palpable just in the way she holds herself. ]

[And, true to Griffin's preferred method of singing, as the repetition ramps up, so does the raw, outpouring of rock and roll soul into his voice. He practically goes hoarse halfway through - never to hold anything back.]

[The last one steals the breath from his lungs as he empties everything into the mic. That gets a cheer from some enthusiasts in the crowd who were won over by the energy of his first performance.]

[ Honestly, even though she's on the stage with him, she's applauding him too. That was definitely not an easy set there at the end! ]
