Also somewhere in flipping through that pile—there's a loud screech of metal, loud enough to be heard even though it's not in this room, and a huge noise like something heavy crashing into a roof.

[JUMPS with a quiet gasp at the noise, though he doesn't drop the books because that would be a Travesty.
It's scary, but can he go to peek at what the noise was from a distance? Just in case there was an accident or smth and people aren't okay.]

It sounds like it was coming from the direction of the Writing Lounge or the Computer Center? You can certainly check.
