Pokemon: Downtown
This is where people come to play it seems. The Battle Arena, where you can challenge your friends, rivals, or anyone really, sits side-by-side the town's Pokemon Center where you can get your Pokemon healed for free after a rousing battle. You and your Pokemon partner (even your entire unit!) can star in short plays to be aired at the movie theater or even beauty pageants showcasing their new hair-cuts and clothes. There's a karaoke bar, a small theme park, an arcade.

[ Charmander is scampering over and circling Griffi's ankles curiously. WHO IS THIS TOLL MAN, HOW DOES ONE GET TO RIDE ON SHOULDERS ]

[Ha ha lol he learned you were a princess from Levi's memories. Meanwhile, Riolu's nestled his head very comfortably on top of Griffin's head. Everyone jealous.]

if it's anything in that realm....
Charmander tugs at the hem of her skirt, making a concerned sound. She stiffly reaches down and picks him up. There, there. She's not as tall as Griffin, but he can have a ride at least. ]
Well, I don't... not sing. Specifically. ... But I rather doubt that I know any modern music...

Here, I'll show you! [He pushes open the door to the karaoke bar with a mock bow. Inside, the muted sound of loud music and raucous laughter ring through the walls. The room is dim with flashing, coloured spotlights. A wild time is to be promised - after you, princess.]

she's too busy being enthralled by the inside of this place. ]
Oh! ... This reminds me a little of the roller rink we set up back home. We're supposed to sing here?
[ Charmander, too, is gawking at everything on top of her shoulders--like a tiny orange baby. ... With a tail. On fire. ]

[In fact, someone may be yowling out a very loose rendition of a power ballad as we speak. The crowd was cheering, some were singing along - even Riolu starts to howl when the chorus swells.]

You should go sing, Griffin!

Only if you're my back up!

[ Charmander LIKES THIS and is definitely shoving at her calves to get her to follow him up to the stage. ]
But... I'm not going to know any of the songs!
no subject
[He climbs onto the stage and hands her a tambourine, as Riolu hops off his shoulders and grabs a mic. No sweat!]

[ Someone--a stranger in the crowd--is helpfully passing her a mic, too, which she fumbles to hold. She would never admit it, but--her hesitance to get on stage really comes from a fear of making a fool of herself--even if it's just in front of a bunch of people (?) she'll never see again. And Griffin.
Charmander, however, is very insistent upon doing this--and has grabbed himself a pair of maracas at some point and is now using his orange head to sort of guide her up the steps and onto the stage, where she comes to a very awkward stand next to Griffin. ]
It's going to sound--weird!
[ Even with the lyrics, she might be singing behind, or to the totally wrong key... It's not really possible it's okay if she's not any good at it. Right? ]

Trust me, no one's even gonna notice.
[The opening riffs of Welcome to the Jungle rings through the bar - to the cheers of people who recognized the build up, and the barks and yowls of Pokemon who were just very happy to be here and be loud. Riolu starts howling into the mic too, AROOOO!
But Griffin - he's lost in it already, pumping himself up with an air guitar so intense, you could practically hear riffs coming out of his guitarless hands. Lyrics fade in on the screen with a countdown: 3, 2, 1--
Is he singing or is he screaming? It's both. But NO ONE CARES.]
Welcome to the jungle watch it bring you to your-- [He drops, hits the floor, back arched fangs bared in true rockstar style,] KN-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-KNEES, KNEES! YOW!
I WANNA WATCH YOU BLEED!!!
[The room erupts. Anyone who wasn't cheering before starts shouting too, carried away by the pure adrenaline of rock and roll.]

Well.
She's struggling, after she's unfrozen herself, attempting to... make her eyes follow the words on the screen fast enough to keep up, but singing sort of timidly into the mic. ]
Welcome to the jungle, we take it day by day
If you want it you're gonna bleed but it's the price to pay
And you're a very--sexy girl--
'
[ oh. my god??? ]
--very hard to please--
[ no, she can't
don't make her sing this anymore, please, she, ]

What's wrong? Not havin' fun?

Your turn!
[And, hell, it's so fucking cute that the audience is still havin' a good time. Giving Griffin time to turn back to Hiryuu and give her an encouraging touch of the shoulder. He really just wants her to be able to have a good time, too! But he's got a dad-esque patience when he suggests,]
Okay, how 'bout... something a bit more low key. We can do it duet-style - if I sing the first verse, you'll be able to pick up the second.

Hiryuu feels a little bad? She didn't mean to cause him trouble. But--she does like the idea of being able to work with him on something that... is just a tiny bit less rough? And something she can model after him. And she plain appreciates that he apparently cares enough to switch it up for her. She nods her head in agreement. ]
I'd like that.

Attagirl. [Then quickly turns to the machine to queue up another song. The explosive, closing riff of Guns 'n' Roses draw huge applause, with Riolu howling to high heaven with a huge smile on his face.
Griffin gestures for a mic back, and his pup hands it over.]
Okay okay, one more, guys.
[But this time, the slow twangs of a guitar in minor key play out - melancholy but hopeful. A hush washes over the bar.
Griffin shoots Hiryuu a quick signal with his hands - when he points to himself, he'll take the lead, and he'll point back to her when it's her turn. Casually, he struts back into the spotlight, but his eyes are on her the whole time. Singing to her, like an outstretched hand inviting her to this part of his heart.]
I know, nobody knows, where it comes and where it goes.
I know it's everybody sin - you've got to lose to know how to win.

Half my life ss books, written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages
[ Meanwhile, Charmander starts making a keening-humming noise in time and roughly the right notes for the song, which creates an extra wistful effect. ]

Sing with me, sing for the years - sing for the laughter, sing for the tears.
Sing with me, just for today; maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you awa-a-a-ayyyy...!
[Another guitar solo starts up and he shoots Hiryuu another glance. Thumbs up? Doing better?]
no subject
Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
[ As they hit the chorus and the new, simpler lines appear on the screen--an exact or near repetition one after the other--her voice grows louder and more confident, especially as the meaning of the words sinks in and resonates with her. She's not dancing or traveling the stage like he is--but the difference is still quite palpable just in the way she holds herself. ]
Dream on
Dream on
Dream on
Dream until your dreams come true...!

Dream on,
Dream on,
DREAM ON!
DREAM ON!!
AAAhhaahaaaaaaahhhhh...!!!
[The last one steals the breath from his lungs as he empties everything into the mic. That gets a cheer from some enthusiasts in the crowd who were won over by the energy of his first performance.]
